KPFA's
Transmitter Tower
in hills above Berkeley
Still under Armed Guards
Tuesday, August 3, 1999
After an announcement on the SavePacifica email
list on Aug 2 for pickets to meet at the transmitter tower at noon in the
Berkeley Hills - a group of 30+ KPFA supporters gathered at the tower. Channel 2
and 4 News and a reporter from the Berkeley Daily Planet paper were there.
When the first group arrived one guard came to the inside of the fence and said
that they were trespassing (on the outside of the gate). He turned and walked
away when questions were asked and got back into his vehicle. The group
talked, Kahlil explained things to the press and an informal picket line was
formed with chants of "Whose Station - Our Station, Whose Signal - Our
Signal". A single car and policeman appeared from the East Bay
Regional Park Police. I stayed until about 1:30, there was still a group of
25-30 at that time.
Later in the afternoon, I have been told,
one demonstrator crawled under the fence and sometime afterwards 9-10 police
cars (EBR Park and Oakland) arrived - arrests were made, one policeman shoved
one young woman roughly down a hillside. Read
a personal event report by Wm Leslie Howard.
