"Red & White Cross" Block
Sample Quilt Top Layouts
September 2000 - BOM #5
This "Red & White Cross" block is listed in Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns as block #1415 as a Nancy Cabot pattern. Although it is not necessarily listed as a pinwheel pattern, if you color the block in a pinwheel fashion, it becomes a pinwheel. This block can show amazing variation depending on color arrangement, including using a diagonal colorway. I've tried to show many variations in the 10 quilt tops. PLUS - I'm including 3 different "color pages" for quilt tops, 2 horizontal and one on point for you to play with using colored pencils.

A bold look for a pillow or wall hanging.

Similar to the above quilt, but with one extra border and
slightly more subdued colors.
The same color layout as the above 2 blocks, but magnified into a full quilt size.

By coloring the areas in a different way, the look is more like a
ribbon twisting across the quilt. Here the coloring is a soft, country look with
homespun checks.

Yes, this is the same block! - Changing the color plan to asymmetrical makes a big difference in the final look.
