Another Typing Paper Quilt Block

This quilt block has a finished size of approximately 7" sewn. There are many different approaches to putting fabric onto these 4 triangles - I'll show 3 approaches. If you do others and want to share photos, email me.

 First Block Arrangement 

    

Make the strips you sew to one pair of triangles go parallel to the long side (the hypotenuse) as shown below.

And the 2nd pair with strips sewn perpendicular to the hypotenuse as shown below.

Do NOT try to copy the lines I've shown here, each triangle and each block should not be identical, you will be sewing RANDOM strips of fabric to the paper. This is what makes it fast and fun!  

The linear version of the sewn block when the 4 triangles are assembled will look something like the diagram below. Press and trim each triangle before sewing them together. Try to see which you prefer: removing the paper first or leaving it in place.  Join two pairs of triangles to form half the final block, then join those two in a straight seam. Use a 1/4" seam allowance.

You can choose various ways to make color patterns on this sewing pattern. You will see why I suggest playing with colored pencils and a copy machine to play with different layouts (or use quilting software if you have it, I used Electric Quilt to make these blocks and samples)


Block 1 above - Make one pair of triangles scrappy but close in colors (the blue area above). Then make the other pair have a different color in the triangle tips (here in reds) and the lower part another color (here purple).

Or, pick a bright color accent and use it (here in the above block is a bright yellow) and you'll see it will form an overall pattern in the quilt top. Again, here the tips of the triangle pair are a lighter color (light blues) with the outer part of the triangles being a "background" color to match the other triangle pair (dark blues).

Another look is to make the two pairs of triangles completely different - one light and one dark. Either related colors (as here in blues), or try a completely scrappy look with just Light and Dark fabrics sorted randomly.
