Description:  Nocturne DK is both cozy and eye-cathcing in this beautiful shawl.  It is constructed of knitted, fan-shaped motifs to form a scalloped, triangular shawl.

Level:  Intermediate

Size:  65" wide x 21" high

Materials: 

Gauge:  Motif= 7" wide by 5" high on larger needle, 4 sts=1" in garter on smaller needles

IINSTRUCTIONS

FULL MODULE 1:

Using knitted cast-on, CO 50 sts using larger needle

Row 1: (wrong side) Knit

Row 2: Knit

Row 3: Purl

Row 4: K1, *K2 tog, yo* to last st, K1.

Row 5: Purl

Row 6: K1, *yo, K2tog* to last st K1.

Row 7: Purl

Row 8: K5, *K2 tog* to last 5 sts, K5.

Row 9: Knit

Row 10 - 12: Knit

Row 13: Purl

Row 14: Repeat row 4

Row 15: Purl

Row 16: Repeat row 6

Row 17: Purl

Row 18: K5, *K2 tog* to last 5 sts, K5. (20sts)

Row 19-20: Knit

Row 21: Purl

Row 22: K2, *K2 tog* to last 2 sts, K2. (12 sts)

Row 23: Purl

Row 24: K1, *K2 tog* to last st, K1. (7 sts)

Row 25: Purl

Row 26: K1, *K2 tog* to end. (4 sts)

Row 27: Purl

Row 28: K 2 tog twice. (2 sts).

Row 29: Purl 2 tog. Fasten off.

 

FULL MODULE 2: CO 25 sts, with right side facing, pick up and knit 25 sts along right side of module 1. Complete as for module 1.

FULL MODULE 3: Pick up and knit 25 sts along left side of module 1. Turn and using cable cast on, CO 25 sts. Complete as for module 1.

Note: For best results when picking up sts, pick up 5 for every 6 rows.

 

Continue adding modules as shown in drawing below.

 

HALF MODULES at top of shawl:

Cast on 25 sts, pick up and knit 25 sts along left side of module at right edge of shawl.

Row 1: Knit

Row 2: K1, K2 tog, K to last 3 sts, K2 tog, K1.

Row 3: Purl

Row 4: K1, K2 tog, K1, *K2 tog, yo* to last 4 sts, K1, K2 tog, K1.

Row 5: Purl

Row 6: K1, K2 tog, K1, *yo, K2 tog* to last 4 sts, K1, K2 tog, K1.

Row 7: Purl

Row 8: K1, K2 tog, K3, *K2 tog* to last 6 sts, K3, K2 tog, K1.

Row 9: Knit

Row 10: K1, K2 tog, K to last 3 sts, K2 tog, K1.

Row 11: Knit

Row 12: K1, K2 tog, *yo, K2 tog* to last 3 sts, K2 tog, K1. (22 sts)

Row 13: Purl

Row 14: K1, K2 tog, *K2 tog, yo* to last 3 sts, K2 tog, K1. (20 sts)

Row 15: Purl

Row 16: K1, K2tog, K1, *K2 tog* to last 4 sts, K1, K2 tog, K1. (12 sts)

Row 17: Purl

Row 18: K1, K2 tog, K to last 3 sts, K2 tog, K1. (10 sts)

Row 19: Purl

 

Place remaining 10 sts on string, using it as a stitch holder.

Repeat the half motif across top of shawl, picking up sts as for full modules.

Note:  Begin last half module as for full module 3, then work instructions for half module.

 

Border:

Using size smaller needle, with right side facing, pick up and knit 14 sts across top of fan, knit across 10 sts on holder, pick up and knit 14 sts across remaining half of fan (38 sts across top of each section). Repeat across all fans. Knit 5 rows garter stitch.

 

Bind off as follows: With larger needle, knit 2 stitches then knit the 2 stitches on the right hand needle together tbl, *knit the next stitch then knit the 2 sts on the right hand needle together tbl*. Rep between asterisks to the end. 

 

Weave in ends, using ends to close up any gaps between the motifs.
