Description:  This cozy cardigan makes a great indoor or outdoor jacket.  It features a mitered design in garter stitch to flatter and fit well.

Level: Intermediate

Finished Measurements: Chest: 36” (40”, 44”, 48”, 52", 54")

Length: 22” (22”, 24”, 24”, 26", 26")

Materials: 

  • 8 (9, 11, 12, 14, 15) skeins Crystal Palace Nocturne Aran (shown in color  607 "Mushroom")
  • Crystal Palace Bamboo 26” circular size US 8 (5 mm) knitting needles
  • 3 - 7/8” buttons

Gauge:  17 sts/4 inches in garter stitch

Notes:

1. This jacket is easy to knit. You cannot, however, knit it on autopilot. Because it is knit on the diagonal, you are increasing and/or decreasing on every row. You will need to keep track of where you are and be aware of the shaping you are doing.

2. The entire jacket is knit in garter stitch with a slip stitch selvedge. The selvedge is particularly important because there is no other edge finish. The first stitch of every row is slipped as if to purl with yarn in front. The yarn is then moved to the back and the knitting continues.

3. It can be hard to tell which side is your RS and which is your WS in garter stitch. Hang a safety pin on the RS of your work. When you can see the pin, you are working a RS row.

4. This wonderful yarn has no regular color repeat, so it is impossible to match the color stripes from one piece to another. Relax and enjoy the playfulness of unmatched stripes.

Right Back:
CO 3 sts.
Row 1: Sl 1, M 1, K to end of row. Rep this row until you have 54 (60, 66, 72, 78, 84) sts. Mark next row as RS row.
Next row: Sl 1, M 1, K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K 1.
Next row (WS): Sl 1, K to end.
Rep these two rows until long side (beg of RS row) measures 13” (13”, 14”, 14”, 16", 16").

 

Shape Armhole:

Next row (RS): Sl 1, K2tog, K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K 1.
Next row (WS): Sl 1, K to end.
Rep these 2 rows 5 times more – 42 (48, 54, 60, 66, 72) sts.
Next row (RS): Sl 1, M 1, K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K 1.
Next row (WS): Sl 1, K to end.
Rep these 2 rows until armhole measures 9” (9”, 10”, 10”, 10", 10").

 

Shape Shoulder and Back Neck:

Next row (RS): Sl 1, K2tog, K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K 1.
Rep these 2 rows until 4 sts remain.
Next row (WS): Sl 1, K to end.
Next row (RS): SSK, K2tog.
Next row (WS): K2tog, fasten off.

Sew back to fronts at shoulders.

 

Collar:

With RS facing, pick up and K 18 (20, 22, 24, 26, 28) sts up right front neck edge, 28 (30, 32, 34, 36, 38) sts across back neck, and 18 (20, 22, 24, 26, 28) sts down left front neck edge – 64 (70, 76, 82, 88, 94) sts. Next row: Sl 1, K to end of row. Repeat this row until collar measures 2” BO loosely.

 

Sleeves:

CO 36 (38, 40, 42, 42, 42) sts.
Row 1 (RS): Sl 1, K to end.
Repeat this row throughout, increasing 1 st at beg and end of every 6th row 18 (17, 20, 19, 19, 19) times – 72 (72, 80, 80, 80, 80) sts. Continue without shaping until piece measures 17” (17”, 18”, 18", 18", 18") or desired length to underarm.
BO 7 sts at beg of next 2 rows.
Decrease 1 st at beg and end of every RS row 10 times.
BO 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then BO 3 sts at beg of following 2 rows. BO remaining 28 (28, 36, 36, 36, 36) sts.

 

Sew sleeves into armholes. Sew side and sleeve seams. Attach buttons opposite buttonholes.
