Toe-Up Twist Socks on Two Circs

Designed by Kyle Ann Williams and knit by Angie Kachelmeier

Description:  This pattern is worked from the toe-up on two circular needles.  It features short, staggered 4-st cables on the leg, with a comfy, garter-stitch heel.

Level:  Intermediate (knowledge of sock construction, cables)

Size:  Woman's M

Gauge:  8 sts & 12 rows = 1"

Special Stitches:

C4F- Cable 4 Front (Slip next 2 sts to a cable needle or toothpick and hold in front of the work, knit the next 2 sts, then knit the sts from the cable needle.)

MM1- Modified Make 1 (With LEFT needle tip, pick up sts between last st on rt needle and 1st st on left needle. Do not transfer this st to the right needle – it will be knit together with the next st)

Twist Pattern:

Rnds 1 & 2: Knit
Rnd 3: *K4, C4F, rep from * around
Rnds 4-6: Knit
Rnd 7: *C4F, K4, rep from * around
Rnd 8: Knit

Using figure-8 method and 2 circs held close together, cast on 32 sts (16 on each needle). (Note: If you are not familiar with this cast-on method, just search the internet. There are several sites with great pictures demonstrating this method).

Rnd 1: Knit

Rnd 2: K1, m1, k to last st on needle, m1, k1; rep on 2nd needle

Rep these 2 rounds until there are 72 sts (36 on each needle)

Foot: Continue knitting in the round until foot measures approximately 2” (5 cm) less than desired length.

Garter Heel: (Work sts on N1 only)

Row 1: Sl 1, K34, turn

Row 2: Sl 1, k33, turn

Row 3: Sl 1, k32, turn

Row 4: Sl 1, k31, turn

Row 5: Sl 1, k30, turn

Row 6: Sl 1, k29, turn

Row 7: Sl 1, k28, turn

Row 8: Sl 1, k27, turn

Continue working 1 st less each row for 16 more rows

Row 25: Sl 1, k11, MM1, K2tog, turn

Row 26: Sl 1, k12, MM1, K2tog, turn

Row 27: Sl 1, k13, MM1, K2tog, turn

Row 28: Sl 1, k14, MM1, K2tog, turn

Row 29: Sl 1, k15, MM1, K2tog, turn

Row 30: Sl 1, k16, MM1, K2tog, turn

Continue until all 36 sts are active again.

Sl 1, work across heel sts and continue knitting sts on Needle 2 to complete round.

Leg: Work Twist Pattern for approximately 5” (13 cm)

Cuff: Work K2, P2 ribbing for approximately 1½” (4 cm)

Bind off loosely (I prefer to bind off with a needle at least one size larger).

Finish off. Weave in ends.
