Mochi Plus

Mitered Squares Stole (or Scarf)

Description:  This soft, cozy and colorful stole is constructed of knitted mitered squares in slow-striping Mochi Plus.  It comes in two lengths and can also be converted to a scarf by working only one long panel and omitting 3-needle bind-off.  Make four panels for a fantastic throw!


Level:  Advanced Beginner/Intermediate (k2tog and k2 tog tbl, double decreasing, eyelets, mitered constructions, 3-needle bind-off or optional crochet join and border)

Size:  Stole = 18" x 54” or 18" x 70”  (Scarf = 9" x 54" or 9" x 70")


  •  7 (10) balls Crystal Palace Mochi Plus (shown in 616 "Equinox") for stole [or 4 (5) balls for scarf]
  • Size 9 – 16” circular needle (or size needed for gauge)
  • 2 Size 9 – 55” circular needles (1 only for scarf) OR 1 crochet hook size I9*
  • Size 9 double point needles
  • 4 Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:   4 sts=1" over St st


Abbreviations: ch- chain;  k- knit; k2tog- knit 2 together; p- purl; rem- remaining; RS- right side (outsidde of project); sc- single crochet; sk2p- slip 1, knit 2 together, pass slip stitch over the knit 2 together (2 stitches have been decreased); sl- slip; sl st (crochet)- slip stitch with crochet hook; St(s)- Stitch(es); St st- stockinette stitch (k the right side Rnds and p the wrong side Rnds); tbl- through the back loop; WS- wrong side (inside of project); yo- yarn over


3-Needle Bind-Off:  Place pieces, RS together with needles parallel. Using tip of third needle, BO together by knitting through first st on both needles.


*You can either use the 3-Needle Bind-off and knitted edge method to join and complete the border using the 55" circulars, or you can use the crochet method.



Using 16” circular needle, (cast on 33 sts, place marker) 4 times – 132 sts.  Join, taking care not to twist sts.


Note:  Change to double pointed needles when circular is too big for work, with one mitered section on each needle.


Rnd 1:  Knit

Rnd 2: *K1, K2 tog, K to 2 sts before markers, K2 tog tbl, sl marker*.  Repeat between * 3 times more – 31 sts between ea set of markers.

Rnd 3:  Purl

Rnd 4:  Repeat Rnd 2 – 29 sts between markers

Rnd 5:  Knit

Rnd 6:  *K1, K2 tog, (yo, K2 tog) to 2 sts before marker, K2 tog tbl, sl marker*  Repeat between * 3 times more – 27 sts

Rnd 7:  Knit

Rnd 8:  Repeat Rnd 2 – 25 sts

Rnd 9:  Purl

Rnd 10:  Repeat Rnd 2 – 23 sts

Rnd 11:  Purl

Rnd 12:  Repeat Rnd 2 – 21 sts

Rnd 13:  Knit

Rnd 14:  Repeat Rnd 6 – 19 sts

Rnd 15:  Knit

Rnd 16:  Repeat Rnd 2 – 17 sts

Rnd 17:  Purl

Rnd 18:  Repeat Rnd 2 – 15 sts

Rnd 19:  Purl

Rnd 20:  Repeat Rnd 2 – 13 sts

Rnd 21:  Knit

Rnd 22:  Repeat Rnd 6 – 11 sts

Rnd 23:  Knit

Rnd 24:  Repeat Rnd 2 – 9 sts

Rnd 25:  Purl

Rnd 26:  Repeat Rnde 2 – 7 sts

Rnd 27:  Purl

Rnd 28:  Repeat Rnd 2 – 5 sts

Rnd 29:  Knit

Rnd 30:  *K1, sk2p, K1*.  Repeat between * around – 3 sts between markers


Cut yarn, leaving a 10” tail.  Thread onto tapestry needle and pull through remaining loops.

Pull up firmly and fasten off.


Second and following squares: 

Using 16” needle, (cast on 33 sts, place marker) 3 times.  (The 3rd marker will mark end of rnd.)


Rnd 1:  With RS of completed square facing, pick up and knit 33 sts along one side of first square and place rem marker.  Join, taking care not to twist sts and knit to end. 

Work Rnds 2-30 as for first square.


Continue adding squares in this manner until 6 (8) squares have been knitted.

Make a second panel in the same manner.  (For Scarf, only do one panel and skip to " Border.")



Option 1:  Using one 55” needle and with right side facing, pick up and knit one st in each cast-on stitch on long side of one panel.  Using a second 55” needle, pick up and knit along second panel in same manner.  Place right sides together and using one dp needle, join with 3-needle bind off.


Option 2:  Using crochet hook and with right sides facing, sl st (crochet) long sides together.



Option 1:  Using 55” needle and with right side facing, pick up and knit one st in each cast-on st on long side of stole.  Knit one Rnd.  Bind off loosely.

Work same border on second side of stole.

Pick up and knit one st in end of Rnd and each cast-on st on short sides of stole.  Knit  6 Rnds.

Bind off loosely.


Option 2:  Using crochet hook and with right side facing you, *work sc in each st around long side of stole, ch 2 at corner, work sc in each st around short end of stole, ch 2; rep from * once, sl st (crochet) into first sc.  Fasten off.


Weave in all ends.
