Heel Stitch Mittens

Description:  This pattern features a slipped stitch, known as a heel stitch, to produce clean stitch definition and a cozy fabric. This pattern is sized to fit both children and adults. 

Level:  Intermediate (working in the round, slipped st, thumb gusset, left-slanting and right-slanting decreases)

Size:  Child (Teen, Woman's Medium, Men's Medium)

Materials: 

  • Yarn: 1-2 - 50g balls of Crystal Palace Mochi Plus (shown in Woman's Medium in #612 Seafoam)
  • Needles: Crystal Palace Bamboo 6" or 8" double-pointed needles in US size 5 and 7 (or size needed for gauge)
  • Yarn needle

Gauge:  5.5 sts=1" on larger needles in Heel Stitch

Abbreviations:  CO- cast on; k- knit; m1- make 1 stitch (pull band of yarn on row below between stitch just worked and next stitch and slip onto left needle, knit into back of this stitch to make a new stitch); p- purl; p2sso- pass the 2 slipped stitches over the stitch just knit; rnd- round; sl- slip; sl2tog k-wise- slip 2 stitches as if to knit them together; st(s)- stitch(es); yo- yarn over

 

INSTRUCTIONS

With smaller needles, CO 36 (42, 48, 54) sts. Join and begin working in the rnd. Work the following 2 rnds of ribbed edge 3 times:

 

Rnd 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 2: *Sl 1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.

 

Begin Heel Stitch Pattern:

Change to larger needles.

Rnd 1: K.

Rnd 2: *Sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

 

Repeat these 2 rnds until piece measures approx. 2½ (3, 3½, 4)" from cast-on edge, ending with a Rnd 2.

 

Begin Thumb Gusset:

Rnd 1: K2, m1, k1, m1, k1 to end or rnd.

Rnd 2: Sl 1, k2, sl 1, k2, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 3: K2, m1, k3, m1, k1 to end or rnd.

Rnd 4: *Sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 5: K2, m1, k5, m1, k1 to end or rnd.

Rnd 6: Sl 1, k2, (sl 1, k1) 2x, sl 1, k2, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 7: K2, m1, k7, m1, k1 to end or rnd.

Rnd 8: As for Rnd 4.

Rnd 9: K2, m1, k9, m1, k1 to end or rnd.

Rnd 10: Sl 1, k2, (sl 1, k1) 4x, sl 1, k2, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 11: K2, m1, k11, m1, k1 to end or rnd.

Rnd 12: As for Rnd 4.

Rnd 13: K2, m1, k13, m1, k1 to end or rnd.

Rnd 14: Sl 1, k2, (sl 1, k1) 6x, sl 1, k2, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 15: K2, m1, k15, m1, k1 to end or rnd.

Rnd 16: As for Rnd 4.

 

For Child size only:

Rnd 17:  K3, sl 14 sts onto scrap yarn, k to end of rnd.

Rnd 18: Sl 1, k1, sl 2 tog k-wise, k1, p2sso, k1, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

 

For Teen size only:

Rnd 17: K2, m1, k17, m1, k1 to end or rnd.

Rnd 18: Sl 1, k2, (sl 1, k1) 8x, sl 1, k2, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 19: K3, sl 16 sts onto scrap yarn, k to end of rnd.

Rnd 20:  Sl 1, k1, sl 2 tog k-wise, k1, p2sso, k1, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

 

For Woman's size only:

Rnd 17: K2, m1, k17, m1, k1 to end or rnd.

Rnd 18: Sl 1, k2, (sl 1, k1) 8x, sl 1, k2, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 19: K2, m1, k19, m1, k1 to end or rnd.

Rnd 20: As for Rnd 4.

Rnd 21: K3, sl 18 sts onto scrap yarn, k to end of rnd.

Rnd 22: Sl 1, k1, sl 2 tog k-wise, k1, p2sso, k1, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

 

For Men's size only:

Rnd 17: K2, m1, k17, m1, k1 to end or rnd.

Rnd 18: Sl 1, k2, (sl 1, k1) 8x, sl 1, k2, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 19: K2, m1, k19, m1, k1 to end or rnd.

Rnd 20: As for Rnd 4.

Rnd 21: K2, m1, k21, m1, k1 to end or rnd.

Rnd 22: Sl 1, k1, sl 2 tog k-wise, k1, p2sso, k1, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 23: K3, sl 20 sts onto scrap yarn, k to end of rnd.

Rnd 24: Sl 1, k1, sl 2 tog k-wise, k1, p2sso, k1, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

 

Work even in Heel Stitch Pattern until piece measures 1½ (2, 2¼, 2½)" less than desired length.

 

Begin Top Decrease:

Dec Rnd:  [K1, ssk, work pattern over 12 (15, 18, 21), k2 tog, k1] twice.
