Estonian Rib Boot Toppers

Designed by Gail Tanquary

Description:  These boot toppers are the bees knees!  Get the knee-high look for your boots in about a third of the knitting time.  Look stylish and be warm with these shortened leg warmers that fit just inside the top of your boot.  The Estonian Rib pattern looks gorgeous in alternating bands of slow-striping Mochi Plus.  These make great gifts, too!

Level: Easy - Intermediate (working in the round, increasing, k2tog, yo's)

Size:  14" circumference

  • 2 balls in A and 1 ball in B of Crystal Palace Mochi Plus (A shown in 631 "Yosemite" and B shown in 626 "Citron Mist")
  • Crystal Palace 12" S&L Circular Needles (or double-pointed needles) in US sizes 5 and 7, or size needed for gauge
  • Stitch marker
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:  6 sts= 1" in Estonian Rib on larger needles (~5 sts=1" in St st on larger needle)

Abbreviations:  k- knit; k2tog- knit 2 stitches together; rnd(s)- rounds; st(s)- stitch(es); yo- yarn over

Right increase (inc):  Tip left needle forward, insert tip of right needle into purl bump of stitch one row below and knit 1 stitch, then knit the stitch on the needle.

M1:  insert left needle from front to back under strand before next st, then knit into

the back of this strand for increase.

Using smaller needle and color A, cast on 70 sts.   Place marker and join, taking care not to twist sts. Work in K1-P1 rib for 1”.

Knit one round even

Increase round:  *K4, right inc in next st*.  Repeat between * around – 84 sts.

Knit one round even.

Change to larger needle and begin Estonian Rib pattern.

Estonian Rib:  *K2, yo, K2, K2 tog.* all around.

Repeat Estonian Rib 3 times more.  Change to color B and work Estonian Rib for 4 rnds.  Change to color A and work Estonian Rib for 4 rnds.  Change to color B and work Estonian Rib or 4 rnds.

Continuing with color B, knit one rnd even.

Decrease round:   *K4, K2 tog* to end – 70 sts.

Knit one rnd even.

Purl 3 rnds (making a turning ridge).

Second half of boot topper:

Change to A and work 5 rnds in K1-P1 rib.  Continue in K1-P1 ribbing for 3” total, changing color every 5 rnds.

Note:  When changing colors in ribbing, K the first rnd, then resume K1-P1 rib.  This makes a smooth line when changing colors in ribbing.

Change to smaller needle and work 1” in K1-P1 rib.  Using tip of size 7 needle, bind off in pattern.
