Inca Clouds

Cozy Mittens (One-Ball Project!)

Description:  Inca Clouds is the ultimate cozy yarn to combat winter!  These mittens are quick to make, soft and warm to wear.  One ball will make a pair.

Level: Easy/Intermediate (working in the round on dpn's, inc, dec, holding sts to be reworked later)

Size:  Child = 7" circumference x 8" high;  Adult =9" circumference x 10.5" high

Materials: 

  • 1 ball of Crystal Palace Inca Clouds (Child shown in 806 "Pansy Purple", Adult shown in 406 "Peruvian Lilies")
  • Crystal Palace Bamboo 6" or 8" double-pointed needles in US size 8 (or size needed for gauge)
  • 2 stitch markers
  • Scrap yarn (~12"-18")
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:  3.5 sts=1"

Abbreviations:  beg- beginning; CO- cast on; dpn-double-pointed needle; dpn- double-pointed needles; k- knit;  k2tog- knit 2 stitches together; kfb- knit in the front and then the back loop of the stitch, increasing by one; p- purl; p2sso- pass the 2 slipped stitches over the stitch just worked;  patt- pattern; pu- pick up; rem- remaining; rnd- round; ssk- slip, slip, knit (slip one stitch knitwise onto working needle then slip the next stitch knitwise onto working needle, slip back onto left needle and knit together; St st- stockinette stitch; st(s)- stitch(es)

 

INSTRUCTIONS

Note: Instructions for Child and Adult sizes are displayed separately.

 

CHILD SIZE

CO 26 sts.  Divide over 3 or 4 dpn's.  Join, being careful not to twist the sts. 

 

K one rnd.

P one rnd.

K one rnd.

P one rnd.

 

Change to St st (k every rnd).  Work even until piece measures 3" from cast-on edge.  Begin thumb gusset for child size.

 

Thumb Gusset for Child Size:

Rnd 1: Pm, kfb in 1st st, kfb in 2nd st, pm, k to end of rnd.  (28 sts)

Rnd 2, 4, 6:  K (slipping markers as you go).

Rnd 3:  Sm, kfb in 1st st, k to 1 st before 2nd marker, kfb, sm, k to end of rnd.  (30 sts)

Rnd 5:  As Rnd 3.  (32 sts)

Rnd 7:  As Rnd 3.  (34 sts)

Rnd 8:  Sm, k1, sl 8 sts onto scrap yarn, k1, remove 2nd marker, k to end of rnd.

 

Continue to work even in St st over 28 sts until piece measures 6.5", or ~1" less than desired finished length.  Begin top decrease for child size.

 

Top for Child Size:

Rnd 1:  Sm, k1, ssk, k7, k2tog, k1, pm, k1, ssk, k7, k2tog, k1.  (22 sts)

Rnd 2:  K (slipping markers as you go).

Rnd 3:  *Sm, k1, ssk, k to 3 sts before 2nd marker, k2tog, k1; rep from * once more.   (18 sts)

Rnd 4:  As Rnd 2.

Rnd 5:  As Rnd 3.  (14 sts)

Rnd 6:  As Rnd 3.  (10 sts)

Rnd 7.  K2tog around.  (5 sts)

 

Cut yarn, leaving ~6-8" tail.  Thread with tapestry needle and draw through rem 5 sts.  Secure on inside of mitten and weave in end.

 

Finishing the Thumb for Child Size:

Divide the 8 sts over three dpn's.  Pick up one st from hand at thumb gap.  (9 sts)

 

Work even in St st for 1" (or 0.25" less than desired thumb length).  Begin top of thumb decrease.

 

Top of Thumb for Child Size:

Rnd 1 (dec):  (K1, k2tog) around.  (6 sts)

Rnd 2 (dec):  (K2tog) around.  (3 sts)

 

Cut ~6-8" tail.  Thread tapestry needle and draw yarn through rem 3 sts.  Secure on inside of thumb and weave in end.  Weave in end at beg of thumb, using it to close up any rem gap.

 

 

ADULT SIZE

CO 32 sts.  Divide evenly over 4 dpn's.  Join, being careful not to twist the sts. 

 

K one rnd.

P one rnd.

K one rnd.

P one rnd.

 

Change to St st (k every rnd).  Work even until piece measures 4" from cast-on edge.  Begin thumb gusset for adult size.

 

Thumb Gusset for Adult Size:

Rnd 1: Pm, kfb in 1st st, kfb in 2nd st, pm, k to end of rnd.  (34 sts)

Rnd 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12:  K (slipping markers as you go).

Rnd 3:  Sm, kfb in 1st st, k to 1 st before 2nd marker, kfb, sm, k to end of rnd.  (36 sts)

Rnd 5:  As Rnd 3.  (38 sts)

Rnd 7:  As Rnd 3.  (40 sts)

Rnd 9:  As Rnd 3.  (42 sts)

Rnd 11: As Rnd 3.  (44 sts)

Rnd 13:  As Rnd 3.  (46 sts)

Rnd 14:  Sm, k1, sl 14 sts onto scrap yarn, k1, remove 2nd marker, k to end of rnd.

 

Continue to work even in St st over 32 sts until piece measures 9.5", or 1.5" less than desired finished length.  Begin top decrease for adult size.

 

Top for Adult Size:

Rnd 1:  Sm, k1, ssk, k10, k2tog, k1, pm, k1, ssk, k10, k2tog, k1.  (28 sts)

Rnd 2:  K (slipping markers as you go).

Rnd 3:  *Sm, k1, ssk, k to 3 sts before 2nd marker, k2tog, k1; rep from * once more.   (24 sts)

Rnd 4:  As Rnd 2.

Rnd 5:  As Rnd 3.  (20 sts)

Rnd 6:  As Rnd 2.

Rnd 7:  As Rnd 3.  (16 sts)

Rnd 8.  As Rnd 3.  (12 sts)

Rnd 9:  As Rnd 3.  (8 sts)

 

Cut yarn, leaving ~6-8" tail.  Thread with tapestry needle and draw through rem 8 sts.  Secure on inside of mitten and weave in end.

 

Finishing the Thumb for Adult Size:

Slip the 14 sts evenly over three dpn's.  Pick up one st from hand at thumb gap.  (15 sts)

 

Work even in St st until piece measure 1 (1.5)" (or 0.5" less than desired thumb length).  Begin top of thumb decrease.

 

Top of Thumb for Adult Size:

Rnd 1 (dec):  (K3, k2tog) around.  (12 sts)

Rnd 2:  K.

Rnd 3 (dec):  (K2, k2tog) around.  (9 sts)

Rnd 4 (dec);  (K1, k2tog) around.  (6 sts)

 

Cut ~6-8" tail.  Thread tapestry needle and draw yarn through rem 6 sts.  Secure on inside of thumb and weave in end.  Weave in end at beg of thumb, using it to close up any rem gap.
