Drop Stitch Cowl

Description:  This easy cowl is beautiful, light and airy.  It uses dropped yarn-over stitches to create bands of simple lace.  It is worked back and forth, then the ends are sewn together to create the cowl.

Level:  Easy

Size:  ~8" high x 31" long (before sewing seam)


  • 1 ball of Crystal Palace Danube DK (shown in 303 "Provence")
  • Crystal Palace Bamboo 26" circular needles in US size 8 (or size needed for gauge)
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:  3.5 sts=1" in drop st and garter st pattern

Abbreviations:  BO- bind off, CO- cast on, garter st- knit every row; k- knit; p- purl; rep- repeat; st(s)- stitch(es); x- times; yo- yarn over



This pattern is worked back and forth on circular needles.  The circular needles are used to accomodate the width of the cowl.


Loosley CO 105 sts. Work garter st for 4 rows.  Begin Drop Stitch Pattern.


Drop Stitch Pattern:

Next Row: * k1, (yo) 2x; rep from * to last st, k1.

Next Row: * k1, drop the 2 yo's; rep from * to last st, k1

Work 4 rows of garter st.

Repeat these 6 rows 6 more times.  BO loosely. 



Block piece gently.  Sew up seam.  Weave in ends.  Enjoy!
