Granny Square Afghan

Description:  This cozy blanket is squishy soft, and works up quickly in Cuddles.  It is made up of 16 traditional granny squares with border.

Level:  Easy/Intermediate (granny squares, dc)

Size:  28" x 28" without border (31" x 31" including border

Materials: 

  • 3 skeins Crystal Palace Cuddles Color 7002 (Bebe) - A
  • 2 skeins Crystal Palace Cuddles Color 6106 (Creole Rose) - B
  • 2 skeins Crystal Palace Cuddles Color 6101 (Snow White) - C
  • Size H crochet hook in Crystal Palace Bamboo

Gauge:  Granny square = 7" x 7"

Abbreviations: 

 

INSTRUCTIONS

This granny square is made by turning at the end of each round.  The result is a square that has no right or wrong side ( making the afghan reversible, looking good on both sides).   It also prevents the squares from biasing.

 

Granny Square:

Row 1:  Using color A, ch 6, join to form ring.  Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, (ch 2, 3 dc in ring) 3 times, ch 1, join with hdc to top of beg ch 3.

 

Row 2:  Ch 3, turn.  2 dc in space just made, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next sp) 3 times, 3 dc in last sp, ch 1, hdc in top of beg ch 3, pulling color B thru last 3 loops.

 

Row 3:  With color B, Ch 3, turn.  2 dc in space just made, *3 dc in next sp between 2 clusters, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner sp.*   Repeat between * around, ending 3 dc in last space between clusters, 3 dc in last corner sp, ch 1, join with hdc in top of beg ch 3.

 

Row 4:  With color B, Ch 3, turn.  2 dc in space just made, *3 dc in next each of next 2 spaces, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner sp.*  Repeat between * twice more, 3 dc in next each of next 2 spaces, 3 dc in last corner sp, ch 1, join with hdc to top of beg ch 3, drawing color A thru last 3 loops.

 

Row 5:  With color A, Ch 3, turn.  2 dc in space just made, *3 dc in ea space to corner, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner sp.*  Repeat between * twice more,3 dc in ea sp to corner, 3 dc in corner sp, ch 1, join with hdc to top of beg ch 3.

 

Row 6:  With color A, repeat round 5.  Fasten off.

 

Make 7 more squares in the same manner with color A.

 

Make 8 squares, substituting color C for color B.

 

Join square as shown in drawing, by either sewing them together or joining with slip stitch.

To join with slip stitch, place same sides together and slip st into back loop of each stitch.

 

Border:  Join Color A in any corner with slip st.  Ch 3, 2 dc in corner sp, dc in each dc around, working (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in each corner sp.  Ch 2 and join with sl st to top of beg ch 3.

 

Final round:  *Ch 3, skip 2 dc, dc in next dc, ch 3, 3 dc under bar of dc just completed.*  Repeat between * around. Join with sl st to first stitch.  Fasten off.
