Allegro Dk & Nubbles

Heel Stitch Mittens

Description:  The Heel Stitch is a slipped-stitch rib pattern that is often used to make a sturdy heel when making socks.  But it is also great worked a little looser for warm and cozy accessories, like these fingerless mitts.  These short hand warmers work up quickly and take only one 50-gram skein to make.

Size: 

Materials: 

  • 1 skein of Crystal Palace Allegro DK (shown in 6005 "Coal Black")
  • Crystal Palace Bamboo Needles: 8" double points in US 5 (for Allegro DK) and US 10.5 (for Nubbles) or size needed for gauge)
  • Scrap yarn
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:  6.5 sts=1" in Allegro DK over Heel St; 3 sts=1" in Nubbles over rev St st

Abbreviations:  BO- bind off; CO- cast on; k- knit; m1- make 1 stitch (pull band of yarn on row below between stitch just worked and next stitch and slip onto left needle, knit into back of this stitch to make a new stitch); p- purl; p2sso- pass the 2 slipped stitches over the stitch just knit; rnd- round; sl- slip; sl2tog k-wise- slip 2 stitches as if to knit them together; st(s)- stitch(es); yo- yarn over

 

INSTRUCTIONS

With Nubbles and larger needles, CO 22 sts and divide over 4 needles.   Join and begin working in the rnd.  Purl 3 rnds.

 

Change to Allegro DK and smaller needles. 

Work following rnd once:  Kfb around.  [44 sts]

 

Begin Heel Stitch Pattern:

 Rnd 1:  K.

Rnd 2: *Sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

 

Repeat these 2 rnds for ~2", ending with a Rnd 2.

 

Begin Thumb Gusset:

Rnd 1: K2, m1, k1, m1, k to end or rnd.

Rnd 2: Sl 1, k2, sl 1, k2, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 3: K2, m1, k3, m1, k to end or rnd.

Rnd 4: *Sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 5: K2, m1, k5, m1, k to end or rnd.

Rnd 6: Sl 1, k2, (sl 1, k1) 2x, sl 1, k2, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 7: K2, m1, k7, m1, k to end or rnd.

Rnd 8: As for Rnd 4.

Rnd 9: K2, m1, k9, m1, k to end or rnd.

Rnd 10: Sl 1, k2, (sl 1, k1) 4x, sl 1, k2, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 11: K2, m1, k11, m1, k to end or rnd.

Rnd 12: As for Rnd 4.

Rnd 13: K2, m1, k13, m1, k to end or rnd.

Rnd 14: Sl 1, k2, (sl 1, k1) 6x, sl 1, k2, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 15: K2, m1, k15, m1, k to end or rnd.

Rnd 16: As for Rnd 4.

Rnd 17: K2, m1, k17, m1, k to end or rnd.

Rnd 18: Sl 1, k2, (sl 1, k1) 8x, sl 1, k2, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 19:  K2, m1, k19, m1, k to end or rnd.

Rnd 20:  As for Rnd 4.

Rnd 21: K3, sl 18 sts onto scrap yarn, k to end of rnd.

Rnd 22: Sl 1, k1, sl 2 tog k-wise, k1, p2sso, k1, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 23:  K.

Rnd 24: *Sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Continue even in Heel Stitch Pattern until piece measures 1.5" less than desired length.

BO in rib.  Weave in all ends.
