Cables 'n Lace Mitts

Description:  These mitts matches the Cables 'n Lace Hat. The pattern features repeats of alternating columns of 3 x 3 cables and eyelets, with top and bottom ribbing and thumb gusset. The stitch pattern has a wonderful stretch.  This pair takes just one skein to make.

Level:  Intermediate (knowledge of basic cables and eyelets recommended)

Size:  8" circumference x 8" high


  •  1 skein of Crystal Palace Allegro DK (shown in color 6074 "Tahiti")
  • Crystal Palace Bamboo Needles: 6" or 8" double points in US size 6 and 8 (or size needed for gauge)
  • Cable needle
  • 3 stitch marker (to mark beg of rnd and thumb placement)
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:   1 repeat of pattern = 2" on larger needles

Abbreviations:  BO- bind off; C6L- cable 6 left (slip next 3 stitches on cable needle an hold in front of work, knit next 3 stitches, then knit the 3 stitches off the cable needle; CO- cast on; k- knit; k2tog-knit 2 stitches together; p- purl; rep- repeat; st(s) - stitches; x- times; yf- yarn forward (bring the yarn forward when making a knit stitch to make an eyelet hole - increases by 1 stitch); yo- yarn over (bring yarn around needle to make an eyelet hole - increases by 1 stitch)



With smaller needles, CO 48 sts.  Place stitch marker to mark beg of rnd.  Distribute evenly over 4 dpn's (12 sts/dpn).  Join and work k2 x p1 rib for 1".  Change to larger needles.


Begin Cables-and-Lace Pattern:

You can also refer to the Chart at the bottom of the pattern.


Rnd 1:  *p1, k2tog, yf, k2tog, yo, p1, k6; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 2 (and all even rnds):  *p1, k4, p1, k6; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 3:  *p1, (yf, k2tog) 2x, p1, k6; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 5:  Rnd 1.

Rnd 7:  Rnd 3.

Rnd 9:  *p1, k2tog, yf, k2tog, yo, p1, C6L; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 11:  Rnd 3.

Rnd 12:  Rnd 2.


Work these 12 rnds once, then work Rnds 1-10 once more.  On your last rnd (Rnd 10), pm's after the 8th and 10th sts for the thumb.


Begin Thumb Gusset:

Next Rnd:  Work Cables-and-Lace patt to first thumb marker, sm, m1, k to 2nd thumb marker, m1, sm, k2, work Cables-and-Lace patt to end of rnd.

Next Rnd:  Work Cables-and-Lace pattern to 1st marker, sm, k to 2nd marker, sm, k2, work Cables-and-Lace patt to end.
Repeat these 2 rnds until you have 20 sts between the thumb markers.  (You should just have finished a Rnd 4 of Cables-and-Lace patt.)

Next Rnd:  Work Rnd 5 of Cables-and-Lace patt to 1st thumb marker, remove marker, k1, sl 18 sts onto scrap yarn, k1, remove 2nd thumb marker, k2, work Cables-and-Lace patt to end.


Continue to work even in Cables-and-Lace as follows: work Rnds 6-12 once, then work Rnds 1-2 once more.  Change to smaller needles and work k2 x p1 rib for ½".  BO in rib.


Finishing the Thumb:

Sl 18 thumb sts onto 3 dpn's (6 sts each).  Join yarn and work k2 x p1 rib for ½".  BO in rib.  Weave in all ends.  Use the yarn end at the gusset to close up gap when weaving it.
