Heel Stitch Mitts

Description:  The Heel Stitch is a slipped-stitch rib pattern that is often used to make a sturdy heel when making socks.  But it is also great worked a little looser for warm and cozy accessories, like these fingerless mitts.  These short hand warmers work up quickly and take only one 50-gram skein to make.

Level: Advanced Beginner / Intermediate

Size:  Adult Medium (8" circumference x 6.5" tall)

Materials: 

Gauge:  5 sts = 1" over Heel Stitch pattern on larger needles

Abbreviations:  BO- bind off; CO- cast on; k- knit; m1- make 1 stitch (pull band of yarn on row below between stitch just worked and next stitch and slip onto left needle, knit into back of this stitch to make a new stitch); p- purl; p2sso- pass the 2 slipped stitches over the stitch just knit; rnd- round; sl- slip; sl2tog k-wise- slip 2 stitches as if to knit them together; st(s)- stitch(es); yo- yarn over

 

INSTRUCTIONS

With smaller needles, CO 40 sts and divide evenly over 4 needles. Join and begin working in the rnd. Work the following 2 rnds of ribbed edge 3 times:

 

Rnd 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 2: *Sl 1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.

 

Begin Heel Stitch Pattern:

Change to larger needles.

 

Rnd 1:  K.

Rnd 2: *Sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

 

Repeat these 2 rnds until piece measures 2" from cast-on edge, ending with a Rnd 2.

 

Begin Thumb Gusset:

Rnd 1: K2, m1, k1, m1, k to end or rnd.

Rnd 2: Sl 1, k2, sl 1, k2, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 3: K2, m1, k3, m1, k to end or rnd.

Rnd 4: *Sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 5: K2, m1, k5, m1, k to end or rnd.

Rnd 6: Sl 1, k2, (sl 1, k1) 2x, sl 1, k2, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 7: K2, m1, k7, m1, k to end or rnd.

Rnd 8: As for Rnd 4.

Rnd 9: K2, m1, k9, m1, k to end or rnd.

Rnd 10: Sl 1, k2, (sl 1, k1) 4x, sl 1, k2, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 11: K2, m1, k11, m1, k to end or rnd.

Rnd 12: As for Rnd 4.

Rnd 13: K2, m1, k13, m1, k to end or rnd.

Rnd 14: Sl 1, k2, (sl 1, k1) 6x, sl 1, k2, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 15: K2, m1, k15, m1, k to end or rnd.

Rnd 16: As for Rnd 4.

Rnd 17: K2, m1, k17, m1, k to end or rnd.

Rnd 18: Sl 1, k2, (sl 1, k1) 8x, sl 1, k2, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 19: K3, BO 16 sts, k to end of rnd.

Rnd 20: Sl 1, k1, sl 2 tog k-wise, k1, p2sso, k1, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 21:  K.

Rnd 22: *Sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Continue even in Heel Stitch Pattern until piece measures ¾" less than desired length. Change to smaller needles and work the following 2 rnds of rib 3 times:

 

Rnd 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 2: *Sl 1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.

 

BO in rib.  Weave in all ends.
