Aran Wool & Cotton Chenille
on Single Point Needles
MATERIALS
Crystal Palace Aran 100%
wool, 50gm (102 yds), 2 balls MC (1020-black), 1 ball color B (1004-yellow
gold).
Crystal Palace
Cotton Chenille 100% cotton, 50 gm (98yds), 1 ball each of colors A
(9719 plum) and C (4043 cypress).
Crystal Palace Bamboo Needles sizes 5 and 7
single points
[Note: This is a hat pattern which does not need to use double
point needles.]
GAUGE: 4.75 sts = 1" in Stockinette stitch (St st) in
Aran wool.
Take time to check gauge.
Abbreviations:
RS: Right side
WS: Wrong side
Sl 1: slip one stitch purlwise
psso: pass slip st over
yo: yarn over
tog: together
M 1: make one st
Hat:
Using size 5 needles and yarn A cast on 120 sts. With color B begin two color
rib as follows:
Row 1:(RS) (K2 color A, P2 color B) rep to end.
Row 2: (WS) (K2 color B, P2 color A) rep to end.
Repeat these rows once more. Change to larger needles and begin Chart 1, row 1.
Work chart through row 27. P 1 row in MC.
Shape Crown:
Row 1: (RS) (Sl 1, K1, psso, K8) rep to end.
Row 2 and all even rows: Purl.
Row 3: (Sl 1 ,K 1, psso, K 7) rep to end.
Row 5: (Sl 1, K1, psso, K6) rep to end.
Row 7: (Sl 1, K1, psso, K 5) rep to end.
Row 9: (Sl 1, K1, psso, K 4) rep to end.
Row 11: (Sl 1, K1, psso, K 3) rep to end.
Row 13: (Sl 1, K1, psso, K 2) rep to end.
Row 15: (Sl 1, K1, psso, K 1) rep to end,
Row 17: (K 2 tog) rep to end.
Break off yarn, leaving enough to sew hat seam. Using a tapestry needle run yarn
through rem stitches, and pull snug. Sew seam. Weave in all ends.
Mittens: Two sizes: small (large)
Right Mitten:
Using size 5 needles cast on 40(48) sts. Work 10 rows ribbing as for hat (Row 1:
K2 A, P2 B, Row 2: K2 B, P2 A). Change to size 7 needles and begin Chart 2,
at same time:
Row1: K21(25), M1, K1, M1, K18(22).
Rows 2 & all even rows: Purl.
Rows 3 & 7: Knit.
Row 5: K21(25), M1, K3, M1, K18(22).
Row 9: K21(25), M1, K5, M1, K18(22).
Continue increasing in established pattern until 52(60) sts. Work one row.
Thumb shaping:
Next row: K34(38), turn.
Next row: K1, P13, turn, cast on 2 sts.
Work 10(12) rows on these 16 sts, placing rem sts on st holders.
Shape Top of Thumb:
1st row: K1, *K2 tog, K1, rep from * to end.
2nd row: P1, *P2 tog, rep from * to end.
Break off yarn, leaving enough to sew thumb seam. With a tapestry needle run
yarn through rem sts and pull snug. With RS facing, join yarn and knit sts from
st holders, picking up 2 sts from cast on sts at base of thumb. Knit to end.
Work 13(17) rows.
Mitten Top Shaping:
Row 1: K1, Sl 1, K1, psso, K14(18), K2 tog, K2, K2 tog, K14(18), Sl 1, K1, psso,
K1.
Rows 2,4,6 & 8: Purl.
Row 3: K1, Sl 1, K1, psso, K12(16), K2 tog, K2, K2 tog, K12(16), Sl 1, K1,
psso,K1.
Row 5: K1, Sl 1, K1, psso, K1, Sl 1, K1, psso, K7(11), K2 tog, K2, k2 tog,
K7(11) Sl 1, K1, psso, K1, Sl 1, K1, psso, K1.
Row 7: K1, Sl 1, K1, psso, K1, Sl 1, K1, psso, K4(8), K2 tog, K2, K2 tog, K4(8),
Sl 1, K1, psso, K1, Sl 1, K1, Psso, K1.
Row 9 (for size large only): K1, Sl 1, K1, psso, K1, Sl 1, K1, psso, K3, K2 tog,
K2 tog, K2, K2 tog, K2 tog, K3, Sl 1, K1, psso, K1, Sl 1, K1, psso, K1.
Next Row: P2 tog, P7, P2 tog, P7, P2 tog.
Next Row: Sl 1, K1, psso, Sl 1, K1, psso, K2 tog, K2 tog, K1, K2 tog, K2 tog, Sl
1, K1, psso, Sl 1, K1, psso. (9 sts rem).
Break off yarn, leaving enough to sew side seam of mitten. Run yarn through rem
sts and pull snug.
Left Mitten:
Cast on 40(48) sts using size 5 needles. Work as for right mitten, reversing
motif placement and shaping for thumb gusset.
For example: Row 1: K18(22),M1,K1,M1,K21(25).
Thumb Shaping:
Next row: K32(36), turn.
Next row: K1, P13, cast on 2 sts.
Work 10(12) rows on these 16 sts.
Shape thumb top same as for right mitten. Complete hand and top shaping same as
for right mitten. Sew up side and thumb seams, taking care to close any holes
that may develop around thumb base.
