TuTu Spiral Hat with Merino 5
Crystal Palace Yarns
Designed by Laura Andersson for Crystal Palace Yarns

Level: Advanced Beginner-Intermediate

Introduction: TuTu is an exciting self-ruffling yarn. Knit along with Merino-5, it's highly versatile for fun & creative knitting projects The hat shown here is worked in a gradual spiral (using the TuTu for only part of each round), making a uniquely fun design.

Abbreviations: bor: beginning of round; CO: cast on; dec: decrease; K: knit; K2tog: knit 2 sts together; P: purl; rem: remain(ing); Psso: pass slip st over; rep: repeat; st(s): stitch(es); St st: stockinette st, knit every round; rnd: round; SSK, slip two stitches from left to right needle, one-at-a-time. Insert tip of left needle into these two sts and knit them (Dec of 1); SKP, slip one st from left to rt needle, K next st, pass SL-st over the K st (dec of 1). LT: knit 2 sts together but do not remove from left needle; knit the first st and move both to right needle; WS: wrong side.

1 ball Crystal Palace TuTu, color #112 bougainvillea [CC]
1 ball Crystal Palace Merino 5 color #1012 crimson [MC]

Designer Notes:
1. Please be sure to see hints for handling TuTu on the Crystal Palace website
2. The TuTu CC is always knit along with the Merino-5 MC (this is written as CC+MC).

Cast On: With #8 short circ and MC, cast on 104 sts.
Join, being careful not to twist. Place marker to indicate BOR.
with MC only, K1 rnd, P1 rnd, K1 rnd
Join TuTu, following the CPY TuTu instructions (to tuck the end).
K1 rnd with CC-TuTu + MC-Merino5

Begin spiral pattern:
Rnd 1: K12 with CC+MC; drop CC & work to end with MC only as K2, P2 rib.
Rnd 2: With MC only, work across the first 10 sts in K2, P2 rib.
Pick up CC and work 12 sts CC+MC.
Drop CC & work to end in rib as established with MC only.
Note that this method SHIFTS the CC+MC section over with each round.
Rnd 3: With MC only, work K2, P2 rib across to the last 2 stitches of the CC+MC region,
Pick up CC & work 12 sts with both CC & MC; Drop CC and work with MC only as established in K2, P2 rib to end of rnd.
Repeat Rnd 3 until hat is ~5.5 in from cast on edge.

Crown Shaping
Designer's notes:
1. Continue working the CC+MC spiral as you shape the crown. The decreases occur in the MC-only ribbed section, but NOT in the 12-st section of CC+MC.
2. Switch to dpn as needed (the smaller size dpn enhance neatness in the crown with no effect upon sizing).
Dec Rnd 1: *(K2, P2tog) around (do not decrease in the 12-st CC+MC section). Work 2 rnds of *(K2, P1) while continuing the 12-st CC+MC spiral pattern.
Dec Rnd 2:
*(K2tog, P1) around, continuing the 12-st CC+MC section. Work 2 rnds of *(K1, P1) while continuing the
12-st CC+MC spiral pattern.
Dec Rnd 3:
*(K2tog) around, continuing the 12-st CC+MC section. K 1 rnd.
Dec Rnd 4:
*(K2tog) around, again continuing the 12-st CC+MC section.
When only ~12 sts remain, *K2tog around, this time INCLUDING the 12-st CC+MC section.
Following the guidelines at CPY TuTu instructions cut the CC, and tuck in the end.
Knit 1 rnd with MC only and then cut MC, leaving an ~8 in end.

With a crochet hook or tapestry needle, draw yarn through sts to work in ends. Work all ends in on reverse side so they don't' show. A crochet hook does this very rapidly.
