Taos Slouch Hat
Designed by Laura Andersson, CPY Sock Guru for Crystal Palace Yarns
Inspired by the hat worn by Pete Seeger at the Obama Inauguration in January
2009
Inspiration: During the recent Inauguration
celebration, noted Activist-Singer Pete Seeger wore a hat that I really liked.
It was tall and floppy, with a lot of pretty yarn colors showing in the unique
shape. This is my own interpretation of the hat, using two colors of
Taos yarn.
See the Pete Seeger with
Bruce Springsteen at the Inauguration HERE
Materials:
Yarn:
Crystal Palace Taos, 1 ball each of #013 ‘desert blooms' (CC) and #23
‘Carlsbad' (MC).
Crystal Palace Bamboo Short Circular Needle
size 8 (or size needed to achieve gauge); also DPN for crown. Large eyed
tapestry needle or crochet hook
Gauge: 5 sts per inch (20 sts/10 cm) and 7.5 rows per
inch, over St st.
Size: woman's/man's Small/Medium (size Medium/Large).
The approximate head circumferences are ~19 (21) inches.
Abbreviations: beg- beginning; CO- cast on; dpn- double
pointed needles; K- Knit; K2tog - knit 2 sts together; ndl- needle; P- Purl; PM-
place maker; rep - repeat; sl1- slip one; St st - stockinette stitch; YO - yarn
over; PSSO - pass slip st over; rnd(s) - round(s); st(s)- stitch(es); tog -
together. RT - K2tog but now knit into the first st on needle again and then
move both to right needle. OR, alternately, RT - ‘K into back loop of 2nd st on
needle, now knit the first st'.
Pattern - Knitting Notes
Note 1: carry the non-working color up as you go by
twisting the two yarns together at marker.
Note 2: the yarn is very soft, and the hat-style “snug", so this could also
be a good chemo cap.
Note 3: While the yarn is so pretty it keeps you enthralled as you knit, if
you want a little diversity, then add 1 rnd of *(RT, K2) around.
Instructions:
With Main color (MC) and the bamboo circ, cast on 96 (104) sts.
Join, being careful not to twist; PM to mark end/beginning of rnd.
1. With MC, Purl 3 rnds; work 3 rnds K2P2 rib.
2. Join CC and work in “corrugated rib" (K2CC, P2MC) for 0.75 inches.
3. Drop MC (do not cut) and K 5 rnds CC; Drop CC (do not cut) and K 7 rnds MC.
4. Drop MC and K 5 rnds CC; K 6 rnds MC.
5. K 8 rnds CC; K 5 rnds MC.
6. K 5 rnds CC; k 5 rnds MC.
At this point, the hat is ~8 in from cast-on edge. Begin shaping for crown and
top of hat.
Prepare to switch to dpn as needed.
Crown decreases: alternate MC &
CC as desired. Model shown has CC-3 rnds, MC-2 rnds; CC-3 rnds; MC-2 rnds; CC-2
rnds, MC-2 rnds.
Dec Rnd 1: *(K6, k2tog), around. K1 rnd. Dec Rnd 2: *(K5, K2tog), around. K1
rnd.
Dec Rnd 3: *(K4, K2tog), around. K1 rnd. Dec Rnd 4: *(K3, K2tog), around. K1
rnd.
Dec Rnd 5: *(K2, k2tog), around. K1 rnd. Dec Rnd 6: *(K1, K2tog), around. K1
rnd.
Dec Rnd 7: *(K2tog) around. Repeat as needed until ~2 sts remain.
Now work a 2-st I-cord for ~1/2 in.
Cut yarn leaving an ~8 in end.
Finishing: With crochet hook, pull yarn through each of
rem sts, and drop off needle one at a time. Pull tautly and bring end into
inside. Try a crochet hook for this - no need to thread needle & is very fast.
