Description: This light and airy hat matches the Sausalito Smoky Cables-and-Lace Cowl and Smoky Cables-and-Lace Fingerless Gloves. Knitted at a slightly looser gauge than is typical for a fingering-weight yarn, Sausalito is an excellent choice for this soft and cozy set.
Level: Intermediate (knowledge of basic cables and eyelets recommended)
Size: Adult Medium, 18½" circumference, unstretched
Materials:
Gauge: 26 sts=4" in cable-and-eyelet pattern on larger needles, slightly stretched
Abbreviations: BO- bind off; C6L- cable 6 left (slip next 3 stitches on cable needle an hold in front of work, knit next 3 stitches, then knit the 3 stitches off the cable needle; CO- cast on; k- knit; k2tog-knit 2 stitches together; p- purl; rep- repeat; st(s) - stitches; x- times; yf- yarn forward (bring the yarn forward when making a knit stitch to make an eyelet hole - increases by 1 stitch); yo- yarn over (bring yarn around needle to make an eyelet hole - increases by 1 stitch)
Instructions:
With smaller needles, CO 120 sts. Place stitch marker to mark beg of
rnd. Join and work k2 x p1 rib for 1.5".
Change to larger needles.
Begin Cable-and-Lace Pattern:
Rnd 1: *p1, k2tog, yf, k2tog, yo, p1, k6; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 2 (and all even rnds): *p1, k4, p1, k6; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 3: *p1, (yf, k2tog) 2x, p1, k6; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 5: Rnd 1.
Rnd 7: Rnd 3.
Rnd 9: *p1, k2tog, yf, k2tog, yo, p1, C6L; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 11: Rnd 3.
Rnd 12: Rnd 2.
Work these 12 rnds 4x total, ending with a Rnd 12.
Begin Crown Decrease:
(Change to double-pointed needles when the hat circumference
becomes too narrow for the circular needles.)

Rnd 2: *p1, k3, p1, k6; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 3 (dec rnd): *p1, k2tog, k1, p1, k6; rep from * to end of rnd. [100
sts]
Rnd 4: *p1, k2, p1, k6; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 5 (dec rnd): *k2tog, k1, p1, k6; rep from * to end of rnd. [90 sts]
Rnd 6: *k2, p1, k6; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 7 (dec rnd): *k2, k2tog, k5; rep from * to end of rnd. [80
sts]
Rnd 8: k.
Rnd 9 (dec rnd): *k6, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd. [70 sts]
Rnd 10: k.
Rnd 11 (dec rnd): *k5, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd. [60 sts]
Rnd 12: k.
Rnd 13 (dec rnd): *k4, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd. [50 sts]
Rnd 14 (dec rnd): *k3, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd. [40 sts]
Rnd 15 (dec rnd): *k2, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd. [30 sts]
Rnd 16 (dec rnd): *k1, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd. [20 sts]
Rnd 17 (dec rnd): *k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd. [10 sts]
Cut yarn to leave an 8" tail. Thread yarn needle and draw through rem 10 sts. Weave in ends.
