Merino 5
is a 100% machine washable Merino wool yarn with excellent structure and soft
hand. It shows off stitch patterns beautifully.
It comes in a huge range of printed and solid colors.

Yarns: 3 – 50g balls of
Crystal Palace Merino 5 (Shown in
#9814 “Mocha Chai”)
Needles:
Stitch markers
Gauge:
30 sts = 6 eyelet ribs = 4” on larger needles (unstretched)
Abbreviations: beg-
beginning; BO- bind off; CO- cast on;
k- knit; k2tog/p2tog- knit/purl 2 stitches together;
kfb- knit in front and back loop, increasing by one stitch;
p- purl; psso- pass the slipped stitch over;
rem- remain; rnd-
round; RS- right side (outside of garment);
sl- slip as if to purl,
unless otherwise noted; st(s)- stitches; WS-
wrong side (inside of garment); yo- yarn over
Instructions
HAT:
(To be worked in the round on circular and double-pointed needles)
CO 90 (100) sts. Place marker for beg of rnd and join, taking care not to
twist sts.
Rnd 1: *P2, K3* all around.
Rnds 2-3: Repeat Row 1.
Begin Eyelet Pattern:
Rnd 4: *P2, sl 1, K2, psso* all
around.
Rnd 5: *P2, K1, yo, K1* all
around.
Rnd 6: *P2, K3* all around.
Rnd 7: *P2, K3* all around.
Repeat Rows 4-7 of pattern until piece measures 5.5 (6)”.
Begin decreasing:
Rnd 1: *P2tog, K3* all around. [72
(80) sts rem]
Rnd 2 and all alternate rows: P
the P sts and K the K sts as they face you.
Rnd 3: *P1, K3, P1, K1, K2tog* all
around. [63 (70) sts]
Rnd 5: *P1, K3, P1, K2tog* all
around. [54 (60) sts]
Rnd 7: *P1, K3, K2tog* all around.
[45 (50) sts]
Rnd 9: *P1, K2, K2tog* all around.
[36 (40) sts]
Rnd 11: *P1, K1, K2tog* all
around. [27 (30) sts]
Rnd 13: *P1, K2tog* all around.
[18 (20) sts]
Rnd 15: *K2tog* all around.
[9 (10) sts]
Cut yarn, leaving a 12” tail. Thread
onto needle and draw through rem open sts.
Pull up firmly and fasten off.
FINGERLESS GLOVES:
(To be worked back and forth on single-pointed needles)
Right Hand:
Using a size 7 (8) single-pointed needle, CO 43 sts.
Rnd 1 (WS): P3, *K2, P3* to end
of row.
Rnd 2: K3, *P2, K3* to end of
row.
Rnds 3-5: Repeat Rows 1 and 2,
then Row 1 once more.
Rnd 6: K3, (P2, sl 1, K2, psso) 3
times, rib as established to end.
Rnd 7: Work in rib for 25 sts,
(P1, yo, P1, K2) 3 times, end P3.
Row 8: K3, *P2, K3* to end of
row.
Row 9: P3, *K2, P3* to end of
row.
Repeat Rows 6-9 until piece measures 4” from cast-on edge for both sizes.
End by working Row 7.
Begin Thumb Gusset:
Row 1 (RS): Continue pattern as
established across 23 sts, place marker, yo, p2, yo, place marker, work in rib
to end.
Row 2: Work in pattern to first
thumb marker, sl marker, K into back of yo,
K to one st before next marker, K
into back of yo, work in pattern to end.
(Working into back of the yo closes the hole.)
Row 3: Work in pattern to marker,
sl marker, yo, P to next marker, yo,
sl marker, work in pattern to end.
Repeat these Rows 2 and 3 until there are 16 sts between the markers.
End by working a WS row (Row 2) and purling the sts of the thumb gusset
on the last row.
Next row (RS): Work in pattern to
marker, remove marker, p1, BO 14 sts
(You will have purled the last st before
the 2nd marker in the bind-off), remove marker, work in pattern to end.
Next row: Work in pattern to one
st before bound-off thumb gusset,
Kfb, sl the one st just made back onto left
needle, K2tog, work in pattern to end.
Continue even in pattern for ¾ (1)” more.
Work 4 rows of ribbing without eyelets.
BO loosely in pattern.
Left Hand:
Using a size 7 (8) single-pointed needle, CO 43 sts.
Rows 1-5: Work as for right hand.
Row 6: Work rib as established
across 25 sts, (Sl 1, K2, psso, P2) 3 times, end K3.
Row 7: P3, (K2, P1, yo, P1) 3
times, rib to end.
Row 8: K3, *P2, K3* to end of
row.
Row 9: P3, *K2, P3* to end of
row.
Repeat Rows 6-9 until piece measures 4” from cast-on edge for both sizes.
End by working Row 7.
Begin Thumb Gusset:
Work in pattern across 18 sts, place marker, yo, P2, yo, place marker, work
in pattern to end.
Continue working in pattern, increasing one st each side of thumb gusset as
for right hand.
Work rest of glove as for right hand.
Finishing:
Fold each glove in half and sew the seam.
Weave in all ends.
