Description: This pattern features a slipped stitch pattern, known as a heel stitch, to produce clean stitch definition and a soft, cozy fabric. This hat is fun to knit and works up quickly.
Level: Advanced Beginner
Size: Adult Woman's Medium (7½" long, 17½" circumference, unstretched)
Materials:
Yarn: 1 - 50g ball of Crystal Palace Mendocino (shown in 512 "berry
bay" & below in 517 "dark chocolates")
Needles: Crystal Palace Bamboo 16" circular in US sizes 5 and 7 AND
8" double-pointed needles in US size 7 (or size needed for gauge)
Yarn needle
Stitch marker (to mark beg of rnd)
Gauge: 5.5 sts = 1" on larger needles in Heel Stitch, unstretched
Abbreviations: beg- begin(ning); CO- cast on; k- knit; k2tog- knit 2 stitches together to decrease by 1 stitch; rem- remaining; rep- repeat; rnd- round; sl- slip; st(s)- stitch(es)
Instructions:
With smaller circular needles, CO 96 sts. Join and begin working in the rnd. Work the following 2 rnds of ribbed edge for approx. 1", ending with a Rnd 2:
Rnd 1: *p1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 2: *p1, sl1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Begin Heel Stitch Pattern:
Change to larger circular needles.
Rnd 1: k.
Rnd 2: *k1, sl1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Repeat these 2 rnds until piece measures 5½" from cast-on edge, ending with a
Rnd
1.
Begin Crown Decrease:
(Change to double-pointed needles when circumference is too narrow
for circular needles.)
Rnd 1: *(k1, sl1) 3x, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd. [84
sts]
Rnd 2: k.
Rnd 3: *(k1, sl1) 2x, k1, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd.
[72 sts]
Rnd 4: k.
Rnd 5: *(k1, sl1) 2x, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd.
[60 sts]
Rnd 6: k.
Rnd 7: *k1, sl1, k1, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd.
[48 sts]
Rnd 8: *k2, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd. [36
sts]
Rnd 9: *k1, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd. [24
sts]
Rnd 10: k2tog around. [12 sts]
With yarn needle, sew up rem sts. Weave in all ends.
