Crystal Palace Yarns - free knit fingerless glove pattern

 Mendocino Heel Stitch Fingerless Gloves

Description: This pattern features a slipped stitch, known as a heel stitch, to produce clean stitch definition and a cozy fabric. These short hand warmers work up quickly. See a matching hat here.

Level: Advanced Beginner/Intermediate

Size: Adult Woman Medium

Materials:
Yarn:
1 - 50g ball of Crystal Palace MENDOCINO (shown in 517 "Dark Chocolates") *
Needles: Crystal Palace Bamboo 6" or 8" double-pointed needles in US size 5 and 7 (or size needed for gauge)
Yarn needle

Gauge: 5.5 sts=1" on larger needles in Heel Stitch

Abbreviations: CO- cast on; k- knit; m1- make 1 stitch (pull band of yarn on row below between stitch just worked and next stitch and slip onto left needle, knit into back of this stitch to make a new stitch); p- purl; p2sso- pass the 2 slipped stitches over the stitch just knit; rnd- round; sl- slip; sl2tog k-wise- slip 2 stitches as if to knit them together; st(s)- stitch(es); yo- yarn over

Instructions:
With smaller needles, CO 40 sts. Join and begin working in the rnd. Work the following 2 rnds of ribbed edge 3 times:
Rnd 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 2: *Sl 1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Begin Heel Stitch Pattern:
Change to larger needles.
Rnd 1: K.
Rnd 2: *Sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Repeat these 2 rnds until piece measures 2" from cast-on edge, ending with a Rnd 2.
Begin Thumb Gusset:
Rnd 1: K2, m1, k1, m1, k1 to end or rnd.
Rnd 2: Sl 1, k2, sl 1, k2, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 3: K2, m1, k3, m1, k1 to end or rnd.
Rnd 4: *Sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 5: K2, m1, k5, m1, k1 to end or rnd.
Rnd 6: Sl 1, k2, (sl 1, k1) 2x, sl 1, k2, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 7: K2, m1, k7, m1, k1 to end or rnd.
Rnd 8: As for Rnd 4.
Rnd 9: K2, m1, k9, m1, k1 to end or rnd.
Rnd 10: Sl 1, k2, (sl 1, k1) 4x, sl 1, k2, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 11: K2, m1, k11, m1, k1 to end or rnd.
Rnd 12: As for Rnd 4.
Rnd 13: K2, m1, k13, m1, k1 to end or rnd.
Rnd 14: Sl 1, k2, (sl 1, k1) 6x, sl 1, k2, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 15: K2, m1, k15, m1, k1 to end or rnd.
Rnd 16: As for Rnd 4.
Rnd 17: K2, m1, k17, m1, k1 to end or rnd.
Rnd 18: Sl 1, k2, (sl 1, k1) 8x, sl 1, k2, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 19: K2, m1, k19, m1, k1 to end or rnd.
Rnd 20: As for Rnd 4.
Rnd 21: K3, sl 18 sts onto scrap yarn, k to end of rnd.
Rnd 22: Sl 1, k1, sl 2 tog k-wise, k1, p2sso, k1, *sl 1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Work even in Heel Stitch Pattern until piece measures 3/4" less than desired length. Change to smaller needles and work the following 2 rnds of rib 3 times:
Rnd 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 2: *Sl 1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.
BO in rib.

Finishing Thumb:
With smaller needles, divide thumb sts over three dpn's and remove scrap yarn. Join and work the following 2 rnds once:
Rnd 1: *p1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 2: *p1, sl 1; rep from * to end of rnd.
BO in rib. Sew up hole in gusset on the underside with one of the loose ends. Weave in all ends.
