Concentric Heart Hat

Designed by Laura Andersson for Crystal Palace Yarns

Description: Will you be my Valentine?  Our hearts are joined in this “concentric hearts” motif… each inside the other in loving warmth.  In addition, the Left-Twist Rib intertwines stitches to symbolize togetherness.  Knit a "Valentine" for someone you love today.

Use the Stitch Red color, Merino 5 in #1012 Crimson, to support heart health.  Crystal Palace will donate 5% of the sales of this color to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) on behalf of The Heart Truth® and the Stitch Red Project.

INSTRUCTIONS

With #7 short circ and MC, CO 96 (108) st.  Join, being careful not to twist.
Place marker to indicate BOR.  Using MC, work in K2, P2 ribbing for 2 rnds.

Begin ‘Twisty Rib’:
Rnd 1: (LT, P2) around.
Rnd 2: (K2, P2) around.

Designer’s notes:  To work the LT – K2tog & keep the stitch made on the left needle.  Now K into the 1st st on the left needle, and move both stitches to right needle.  Left Twist made.

Work in Twisty rib for 2 (2.5)" or desired length.

Begin Heart Motif:
Follow Chart and use the Intarsia method.  Remember to carry the MC yarn loosely across.

Designer’s Note:  You will work CC on heart section only.  Use ~3-5 ft lengths of the CC yarn; cut as necessary, leaving at least ~6" ends so they can be safely ‘tucked in’ later.  Don't be afraid to have many ends to weave in!

Next Rnd:  Work Twisty Rib over 20 sts, PM, work chart over 21 sts, PM, K1, work Twisty Rib to end.
Next Rnd: Work Twisty Rib over 20 sts, SM, work chart over 21 sts, SM, K1, work Twisty Rib to end.

Continue to repeat last rnd until chart is complete. (Chart=21 sts wide by 22 sts high)

Work 1 rnd (k2, p2) around, removing markers.
Work Twisty Rib across all the stitches.
When hat is  ~5 (6)" from cast-on edge, ending with a Rnd 1 of Twisty Rib, begin crown shaping.

Crown Shaping:
Be prepared to change to dpn (smaller size) as the stitch count decreases.
Dec Rnd 1: (K2, P2tog), around.  [72 (81) sts rem]
Work 1 rnd as (LT, P1) around.
Work 1 rnd as (K2, P1) around.

Work 2 rnds as (K1, P1) around.
Work 1 rnd as (LT, P1) around.
Work 1 rnd as (K2, P1) around.
Dec Rnd 3: (K2tog, K1) around.  [32 (36) sts rem]
Work 1 rnd of LT around.

Dec Rnd 4:  (LT, K2tog) around.  [24 (27) sts rem]
Work 1 rnd of (K2, P1) around.
Dec Rnd 5: (K2tog, P1) around.  [16 (18) sts rem]

Finishing:
Cut yarn, leaving an ~8 in end.  Using a crochet hook or yarn sewing needle, pull end through each st, one at a time, and drop off needle.
Pull snugly and bring end to inside.  Finish other ends, working each through several sts diagonally on inside.

Block gently.
