Inspiration: My husband loves
hats – so that makes them extra fun to knit. Now his co-workers ask, where’s
your newest hat? This design came about because we were torn between two lovely
yarn colors, so decided to combine them both!
Materials:
Crystal Palace
Kaya 2 - 50 gr balls Main color (MC), 1 - 50 gm
ball Kaya contrasting color (CC)
Crystal Palace Bamboo Circular needles
sizes 10 & 10.5; DP’s in size 10.5 US (6 mm) for crown (or size needed to obtain
gauge).
Note: you may want to go up one size as cables are generally constricting plus
we have to compensate for the 2-color stranding and avoid over-tightening.
Large eyed tapestry needle or crochet hook
Gauge: 4.5 sts per inch (18sts/10 cm) over St st.
Size: Adult M-L (L)
Abbreviations:
CO- cast on; dpn- double pointed needles; K- Knit; K2tog - knit 2
sts together; P- Purl; rep - repeat; St st - stockinette stitch; YO - yarn over;
PSSO - pass slip st over; rnd(s) - round(s); st(s)- stitch(es); tog - together.
C3F: hold 3 sts in front; knit the next 3 sts; now knit the 3 sts from the cable
needle.
Instructions:
With MC & smaller circular needles, CO 96 (112) st. Join, being
careful not to twist and place marker. P1 rnd; work 1 in of K2P2 rib. Change to
larger circular needles, Join CC and begin Bi-colored cables pattern.
Note: to avoid working each cable with a separate strand of yarn as
Intarsia, the pattern is written for “stranding”. This means the color not in
use is carried across the back, laid loosely over the working yarn every
2-3 sts. Do not go to 4 sts or you can end up with excessive tightness; remember
to keep the non-working yarn loose.
Rnds 1 & 2: *[(P2, K6) with CC; (p2,
K6) with MC], around.
Rnd 3: *[(P2, C3F) with CC; (P2, C3F) with MC], around.
Rnds 4-7: as rnd 1.
At the end of every 7 rnds, shift cable thusly:
Knit 4 sts with MC and move the st marker.
Repeat rnds 1-7 of the cable pattern from the new shifted position.
Work the 7 rnd cable pattern as established, including cable shift, for 5-7
repeats, depending on desired hat length. End with rnd 7.
Prepare for crown shaping. This will include a continuation of the cabling;
prepare to change from circ needle to DP for ease of knitting.
Crown

K6 with CC; P1, K6 with MC]
Dec Rnd 3: *[P1, K2tog, K4 with CC; P1, K6 with MC]. Work one rnd of [P1, K5
CC; P1, K6 MC]

Cable: *(with CC - P1, hold 2 front, K1, K2 from holder; with MC- P1, hold 2
front, K1, K2 from holder)
Dec Rnd 7: *(with CC- P1, K2tog, K1; with MC – P1, K2tog, K1). Work one rnd
of (P1, K2 CC; P1, K2 MC).
Dec Rnd 8: (with CC – P1, K2tog; with MC – P1, Ktog). Work one rnd of (P1,
K1 with CC; P1, K1 with MC) *(K2tog CC; K2tog MC), around.
Cut MC if desired leaving an ~8 in end. Repeat the K2tog rnd until only 6-8 sts
remain. Cut yarn leaving ~ 8 in end, and with crochet hook, pull yarn through
each st one at a time and drop off needle. Pull ends tautly and carry to inside.
Finishing: Tuck in all ends
