2 - 50 gr balls of any color. Shown in #563 Tropical Ginger.

Tapestry needle.

Finished Measurements
Adult average [See bottom of pattern for how to make smaller and larger versions.]
Circumference: 18"
The garter stitch fabric is very flexible, so this hat will fit a range of sizes. See below for further tips on adjusting the size.

Gauge
18 sts and 32 rows = 4"/10cm over garter stitch

Abbreviations
CO Cast on; K Knit; K2tog Knit 2 stitches together; PU Pick up
RS Right side; St(s) Stitch(es); WS Wrong side

Directions
CO 17 sts. Work in Garter Stitch (knit every row) until piece measures 32" long.

Next row (WS): K.
Repeat the last 2 rows until 3 sts remain.
Next row (RS): K, k2tog.
Next row (WS): K.
Next row (RS): K2tog. Do not break yarn. Place this final st on st holder.
Fold strip into a spiral as shown in diagram, with diagonal decreased edge to the top of hat. Sew spiral seam as shown in diagram.

Crown
Transfer held st to DP needles. PU and K 59 more sts along top edge of hat, as shown in diagram - 60 sts. Place marker on needle to indicate beginning of round.
K one round.
Next round: * K4, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round - 50 sts.

Next round: * K1, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round - 20 sts.
K one round.
Next round: * K2tog; repeat from * to end of round - 10 sts.
Break yarn, draw through remaining sts, pull tight and fasten off.
Weave in ends.

Fold up lower edge of hat along line marked on diagram. I like it with the notch worn over the left ear, but spend some time in front of the mirror and see what works for you.

To make a different size hat:
To make this hat for a child, cast on 13 sts and work even until strip measures 28".
PU and K only 50 sts around the crown and begin with 2nd set of crown decreases.
To make this hat for a large adult, CO as given, but work until strip measures 36". PU and K 70 sts around crown and add 2 extra rounds to the crown, beginning with * K5, k2tog; repeat to end of round.
