TAOS Sampler Shell pattern

Sizes: 37.5 (41, 45, 49.25)" finished sizes

Materials:
5 (5, 6, 7) - 50 gr balls Crystal Palace
Taos color #03 "adobe"
Crystal Palace Bamboo or DAISY SP Needles size 9, 16" circular needles size 8 - also shown in color #09 - Tucson

Gauge: 19 sts and 28.5 rows/4 inches (10 cm), in St st on size 9 needles, or needle size to give this gauge. For correct sizing, be sure to do a gauge swatch. The stitch gauge is more important than the row gauge if you cannot match both. Note: if you get gauge on size 8 needles, use size 7 circular needles for bottom band and neck band.

Abbreviations:
BO-bind off; beg - begin(ning), cont-continue; CO-cast on; k-knit; k3tog - knit 3 together, p-purl; ptwist - purl st in back of loop, rep-repeat; RS-right side; St(s)-stitch (es); tog - together, WS- wrong side, yo - yarn over

SL2, k1, psso - (vertical double decrease used in Neck Band Pattern) - insert needle into 2nd and 1st sts as if to k2 tog, but slip both sts to right needle, k next st from left needle, then pass 2 slipped sts tog over the k st.

Bands of simple stitch patterns are used across this shell: Stockinette St (St st), 1-1 broken rib, 2-2 seed st, garter st (knit all rows), single row of simple eyelets (YO + Knit 2 together). The neck band is formed with a simple purl-together stitch.

Back
With smaller needles CO 88 (97, 107, 117) sts. Work first 12 rows of the chart (garter st) using circular needle to knit back-and-forth for approx. 1.25"

[For Smallest size Row 132 will be approx. where BO is made for back of neck. For larger sizes, return to Rows 1-14 of chart and follow sequence again until desired length to back of neck is reached.]

Following rows of chart, beg armhole bind off when work measures 11.75” (12.25, 13.25. 15.25” from beg. BO 7 (7, 8, 9) sts beg next 2 rows. BO 3 sts beg next 2 rows. BO 2 sts beg next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at each end every other row 1 (3, 4, 5) times; every 4 rows 1 time and every 8 rows 1 time. 59 (63, 69, 75) sts remain.
Work until armhole measures 7.25 (7.75, 8.25. 8.75)”.

Shape Neck

Work across 17 (18, 20, 23) sts, bind off 25 (27, 29, 29) center sts for neck, join second ball of yarn and work remaining sts.
Working both sides at the same time, BO 4 (4, 4, 5) sts at each neck edge one time, 3 (3, 3, 4) sts at neck edge 1 time and 1 st every other row 1 time. 9 (10, 12, 13) sts remain. Work until armhole measures 8 (8.5, 9, 9.5)”.

Shape Shoulder
BO 4 (5, 6, 6) sts at each shoulder edge once and 5 (5, 6, 7) sts at each shoulder edge once.

Front [neck shaping edit mar 25, '07]
Work same as for Back. When piece meas 18.25 (18.75, 20.25, 22.75)" from beginning
[at approx rows 122 (124, 136, 154)], work front neck shaping: work 20 (22, 23, 25) sts to center 19 (19, 23, 25) sts, attach 2nd ball of yarn. BO center sts loosely, work remaining sts. Working both sides at once, BO 3 at each neck edge once; 2 sts at each neck edge 2 times; dec 1 st each neck edge 4 (5, 4, 5) times. [9 (11, 12, 13) sts remain. Cont in Chart Rows Pattern until piece measures same as back. Work shoulder shaping same as Back. Sew shoulder seams.

Neck Edging
With smaller circular needle and RS facing, pick up 104, 104, 104, 120 sts around neck. Knit one row, purl one row. Work 10 rows Neck Band Pattern St shown at top of this page. BO.

Armhole Edging
With smaller circular needle, RS facing, pick up 94 (104, 104, 118 ) sts along armhole edge.
Work 8 rows of garter st back and forth on circular needle.
Rep for other armhole.

Finishing
Seam sides. Weave in ends on WS.
