Materials

Summer Net - color #3169 strawberry
and Fling - color # 9494 roses print
[Several other color combinations are possible, see the suggestions at the bottom of this page.]
[Note - Rows 4 & 8 were edited for error on May 2, 2005]

Size: 39" (42", 45", 48") finished bust measurement
Materials: 14 (15, 17, 18) balls Summer Net col.3169 "Strawberry";
1 ball Fling in col. 9494 "Roses"
Crystal Palace Bamboo needle Size 10-1/2 (6.5mm)

Gauge: 16-3/4 sts and 29-1/2 rows = 4" in pattern stitch.

Be sure to check your gauge and adjust needle size if needed. Also, it is recommended to practice the Butterfly Pattern in a 22 st swatch before beginning the jacket to learn the stitch and have even tension during the actual knitting.

Butterfly Pattern:
a multiple of 10 sts plus two edge sts.
The Butterfly Pattern is formed by placing Bowknot Sts.

Bowknot St: On next st (which is at center of the slipped group) insert RH needle down through the 3 loose strands, bring needle up and transfer 3 strands to LH needle, p3 strands plus the next st tog to make one st.
Row 1: k1, *with yarn in front slip 5, knit 5* k1
Row 2: p1, *purl 5, with yarn in back slip 5* p1
Row 3: same as row 1
Row 4: p1, *p7, work Bowknot St., p2* p1
Row 5: k1, *knit 5, wyif slip 5*, k1
Row 6: p1, *wyib slip 5, p5*, p1
Row 7: same as row 5
Row 8: p1, *p2, work Bowknot St, p7*, p1
Repeat these 8 rows for Butterfly Pattern.
Note: this pattern can also be used as a multiple of 10 plus 5 plus 2 edge sts. This is the case in the larger sizes. Once you begin the pattern it becomes evident how to end the sequence.

Back: Cast of 82 (87, 92,102) work in pattern for 11-1/2 (11-1/2, 12, 13)".
Armhole Shaping: Bind off 5 sts ea side once. For sizes 45 and 48 dec 1 st at each arm edge every Right Side Row (RSR) 3 (5) times. When arm opening is 8 (8, 9, 9)" bind off all sts.
Note: before starting the front pieces make a note as to where the first Butterfly is located on the back seam line. If the butterfly is next to the seam line you will want to adjust where you begin the pattern so that the pattern is continuous and the two butterflies are not butting up against each other at the seam line.

Front: Cast on 42(42,47, 52) sts and work as for back until 3" from shoulder bind off.
Neck shaping: At neck edge cast off 6sts once 5 sts once and 1st every other RSR 4 times. When front is the same length as the back bind off all sts. Make a second front reversing shaping.

Sleeves: With two strands of Fling held together cast on 37 sts. Knit 1 row with Fling then cut yarn. Join Summer Net and Knit 1 row then begin pattern work 8 rows of pattern then begin increases and incorporate pattern as increases allow. Increase 1 st each side every 6th (6th, 4th, 4th) row 7,(7, 10,10) times then every 8th (8th,6th,6th) row 8(8,10,10) times, when sleeve measures 18" bind off all sts.

Finishing: Sew shoulder and side seams. With two strands of Fling pick up sts along fronts and knit 1 row bind off in purl st. Do the same around neck edge. Sew in sleeves
