free knit baby hat pattern

POOF Baby Hats                                  ac033
designed and knit by
Julie Armin

This pattern was made for these one-year-old twins (head circumference~18-20 inches), but you can easily size it to fit your baby's head by casting on a fewer or greater number of stitches. Poof is super soft and wonderful feeling - perfect for babies.

Crystal Palace Bamboo 8" double points, size 13
and 16" Crystal Palace Bamboo Circular size 13

2 contrasting colors of POOF in 50 gr balls:
Sophia's hat (top photo) used 1 each:
3604 Berry & 4649 Tea Rose
Ramsey's hat (bottom photo) used 1 each:
 #4455 Tender Lime & 3609 Pacific Blue
--Tapestry needle
--Point protectors (optional)

Using circular needles (being careful not to twist first row when joining) CO 48 stitches with the band yarn. k2 p2 rib for six rows (~2 inches). Switch yarns and with the main contrasting color, knit 12 rows (~4 inches).

Split your live stitches equally on two double-pointed needles (24 stitches on each needle), preparing to graft the two sides together with the Kitchener stitch. Turn the hat inside out. Right sides should face one another, with the points of the needles and the end of the yarn pointed to the right. Cut the yarn from the ball leaving a long end on the yarn and thread this end through a tapestry needle. Use the tapestry needle to knit through the first stitch on the front needle; then drop that stitch from the needle. Purl through the second stitch on the front needle and leave the stitch on the needle. Purl through the first stitch on the back needle and drop that stitch off the back needle. Knit through the second stitch on the back needle and leave the stitch on the needle, returning to the front needle and continuing these steps until you reach the end.

For a detailed explanation of how to do the Kitchener stitch, see:

Once you've grafted the stitches together, turn the hat right side out. Create pom-poms by cutting two equal circles from rigid cardboard. The circles should be 2" in diameter. Cut holes in the center of the circles and wind yarn around the cardboard until the center hole is full. Holding your yarn ends, cut around the circle, using the two pieces of cardboard as a guide. Use a long piece of yarn to tie a tight knot between the two pieces of cardboard. Once the knot is tied, remove the cardboard and trim the pom-pom, leaving the long yarn ends of your knot. Use these ends to tie the pom-poms onto the two corners of the hat.

For a diagram of this method for making pom-poms see:

Thanks to Julie for the pattern and the twins for modeling!
