Pattern Stitch (edited 3/29/06)
Row 1: With CC *k3, sl 1, rep from * to last 3 sts, k3
Row 2: With CC *k3, with yarn in front (wyif, in other words, you are working on the wrong side of the garment and you hold the yarn in front of your sts), sl 1, rep from * to last 3 sts, k3
Row 3: With MC, k1 *sl 1, k3, rep from * to last 2 sts, sl 1, k1
Row 4: With MC, k1 * wyif sl1, k3, rep from * to last 2 sts, sl 1, k1Note: The 3-color shading in this yarn is what makes the interesting contrast when the two yarns are knit in this pattern. I suggest that for each piece you begin with new balls of yarn, if this is not possible try to match the shading point in the old yarn with the shading point in the new yarn. This will make for an even flow of the shading.
Back
With MC, CO 75 (79, 83, 87, 91, 95) sts. Knit the first row, then begin the Pattern Stitch. Work until the back measures 21 (21, 21, 21, 22, 22)” long.
Armhole shaping: BO 5 (5, 5, 5, 6, 7) sts at beg of the next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each side every right side row 3 (3, 3, 4, 5, 5) times. Make sure to keep piece in Pattern Stitch throughout. When arm opening measures 9 (9, 9, 9 ½, 9 ½, 10)” long, BO all sts.Right Front
With MC, CO *37 (39, *41, 43, *45, 47) sts. * for these sizes the multiple of sts is not the same as the pattern, to account for the difference simply add an edge st at the beginning and end of the row. Work as for back until arm opening is 6 (6, 6, 6 ½, 6 ½, 7)” long. Begin Neck shaping: BO 8 (8, 8, 8, 8, 8,) sts at the neck edge, then dec 1 st every right side row at the neck edge 4 (4, 4, 4, 4, 4) times. When the front measures the same length as the back, BO all sts.
Left Front
The left front is worked the same as the right front except all the shaping is reversed.Sleeve
With MC, CO 39 (39, 39, 43, 43, 43) sts. Knit the first row, then begin working in the Pattern Stitch. Work for 2”, then begin Arm Shaping: Inc 1 st each edge every 6th row 15 (15, 15, 16, 16, 17) times. Make sure to incorporate the new sts into the Pattern Stitch. When the sleeve measures 17 (17, 17, 17 ½, 17 ½, 18)” long, begin Cap Shaping: BO 5 (5, 5, 5, 6, 7) sts at the beg of the next 2 rows. Then dec 1 st each edge every right side row 3 (3, 3, 4, 5, 5) times. BO 4 sts each side 5 (5, 5, 4, 5, 5) times and for size 45, 6 sts once. BO all the rem sts.Finishing
Sew shoulder seams together. For the side seams with RS facing and using MC, pick up about 90 sts for the back, and using a second needle, pick up 90 sts for the front. With WS’s facing each other, BO all sts using the 3-needle bind off. (K1 st from each needle, then BO in the normal fashion.) This creates a ridge on the RS of the garment. Do the other side seam in the same way.
The collar is worked with MC only. Pick up 75 sts (or 79 for the larger sizes) and work in the Pattern Stitch, starting with Row 2, for 2”.
The front bands are worked in MC and only about 2/3 of the way down the front, leaving the bottom third alone. With RS facing, pick up 63 sts (or 67 sts) and work 7 rows in Pattern Stitch, beg with Row 2. For the button band, space out the button holes evenly and make the button hole on the 3rd row of knitting by binding off 2 sts and then on the following row casting on 2 sts.
Sew on buttons.
