Knit Hat and Mittens with Nubbles & Iceland Wool
Materials:
(1 ball each yarn makes both hat and mittens) 1 100 gr ball
Crystal Palace
Iceland
color
9660, "violet" 1 50 gr ball Crystal Palace
Nubbles
color 404, "celebration"
Crystal Palace Bamboo Needles: 16"
circular needle, size 11 Double point needles, size 11
Accessories:
Stitch markers, waste yarn, tapestry needle
Measurements:
Mittens: Women's size large - 8" around palm, above thumb
Hat: Adult average - 21" circumference
Gauge: 3 sts = 1" and 4 rows = 1"
with Iceland in stockinette stitch on size 11 needles
Abbreviations:
BO - Bind Off, CO - Cast On, Incr - increase, K - knit, K2tog - knit 2 sts
together, Sl - slip, M1- make 1, Sts - stitches, P - purl, PM - place marker
Mittens:
Directions:
Using Nubbles, CO 24 sts. Join, being careful not to twist. Work in
Stockinette Stitch (knit every round) for 2".
Change to Iceland and work K1 P1 ribbing for 2".
Change to stockinette stitch and work set-up round: K 12, pm, m 1, pm, K 12.
Lower palm: K one round even, then work increase round: K to marker, sl
marker, m 1, k to marker, m 1, sl marker, k to end of round.
Continue in stockinette st, working increase round every other round 3 times
more and ending with a plain round - [33 sts].
K to marker, remove marker, place next 9 sts on waste yarn for holding, remove
marker, CO 1 st to bridge the gap, K to end of round - [25 sts]. Continue
working even in stockinette st until piece measures 6" above ribbing.
Shape top:
Round 1: * K 3, k2tog, repeat from * 4 times more
Round 2: K
Round 3: * K 2, k2tog, repeat from * 4 times more
Round 4: K
Round 5: * K 1, k2tog, repeat from * 4 times more
Round 6: K2tog 5 times
Break yarn and draw through remaining 5 sts. Pull tight and fasten off.
Thumb: Place 9 held sts back on
needles. Rejoin yarn, leaving a tail about 6" long, and pick up one st in the CO
st at palm - [10 sts]. Work in stockinette st for 2-1/4". K2tog 5 times. Break
yarn and draw through remaining 5 sts. Pull tight and fasten off.
Use the tail you left between the thumb and the palm to close
up any gaps or holes that developed there. Fold up Nubbles cuff to cover ribbing
and sew in place at top of ribbing.
Hat:
Directions:
Using circular needle and Nubbles, loosely CO 60 sts. Join into circle, being
careful not to twist your sts. K 5 rounds. Change to Iceland and work 5 rounds
K1 P1 ribbing.
Change to Stockinette st and knit until piece measures 5" above ribbing.
Shape top:
Set up round: * K 12, pm, repeat from * to end of round
Decrease round: * K to 2 sts before marker, K2tog, sl marker, repeat from * to
end of round
Continue, working decrease round every round until 10 sts remain.
Break yarn and draw through remaining 10 sts. Pull tight and fasten off.
Fold up Nubbles cuff to cover ribbing and sew in place at top of ribbing.
