free knit hat pattern

Iceland Earflap Hat

Designed and Knit by: Christy Pyles for Sheep to Shawl
This hat will fit most adult or teen heads.

Materials
1 - 100 gr ball Crystal Palace Iceland # 4889 - 'teal lake'
Crystal Palace Bamboo or Daisy Needles size 10 - DP and 16" circular needles
ring marker

Gauge: 3 stitches to 1" in 2X2 rib, relaxed.

Earflaps:
Cast on 3 stitches to a double point needle.
Work in I-Cord for 15"
K1, Increase (knit in front and back of stitch) 2nd stitch, K1. (4sts.)
K2, Increase in 2nd stitch, K2. (5 sts.)
K3, Increase in 3rd stitch, K2. (6 sts.)
K3, Increase in 3rd stitch, K3. (7 sts.)
K4, Increase in 4th stitch, K3. (8 sts.)
K4, Increase in 4th stitch, K4. (9 sts.)
K5, Increase in 5th stitch, K4. (10 sts.)
Continue increasing in pattern as set above until you reach 15 stitches. Leave stitches on double point and set aside.

Second Earflap - repeat from Cast On, through I-cord and earflap.

Knit second earflap, (don’t panic if you put both down and don’t know which was one or two, it doesn’t really matter) onto circular needle.
After knitting across the earflap, cast on 12 stitches.
Pick up other earflap and knit across, transferring it from the double point to the circular needle.
After knitting across the second earflap, cast on another 18 stitches and join into round, marking center with ring marker (Total 60 stitches)

Work in K1, P1 rib for 1".

Change to Circular Stockinette (Knit every row) for 3". (Total from edge 4")

Begin Decrease:
*K8, K2tog*, Repeat *to* around.
Knit one round.
*K7, K2tog*, Repeat *to* around.
Knit one round.
*K6, K2tog*, Repeat *to* around.
Knit one round.
*K5, K2tog*, Repeat *to* around.
Knit one round.
*K4, K2tog*, Repeat *to* around.
Knit one round.
*K3, K2tog*, Repeat *to* around.
Knit one round.
*K2, K2tog*, Repeat *to* around.
Knit one round.
*K1, K2tog*, Repeat *to* around.
Knit one round.
*K2tog*, Repeat *to* around.
Knit one round.
*K2tog*, Repeat *to* around. (3sts.)
Cast off.

With crochet hook or tapestry needle draw yarn tail through center of hat peak. Weave in end. Clip excess. Weave in end at start of round on hat brim and for joins of earflaps.
