MATERIALS: Crystal Palace Waikiki 65% rayon, 35% cotton (100 yds/50 gr)) 7(9,9,10,10) 50 gr skeins, [Photo shows 2 versions in Waikiki: a print color of Waikiki and the natural ecru color.] This vest could also be knit in Mikado Ribbon which knits at the same gauge as Waikiki.
Crystal Palace Bamboo Needles 12" single point sizes 4 and 6, stitch holders.
GAUGE: 5.5 sts = 1" in Stockinette stitch (St st) on larger needles. Take time to check gauge.

Rows 1 to 10 form pattern. Continue in pattern until work measures 12" from beg, ending with a purl row.
Shape armholes: Keeping pattern correct, cast off 6(7,7,8,9) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec at each end of next and alt rows 5(6,7,8,9) times in all. 73(75,77,79,81) sts. Work until armhole measures 5(5,5-1/2,5-1/2,5-1/2)".
Shape neck: next row: K25(26,27,28,29), turn. Cont on these sts. Dec at neck edge in alt rows until 22(23,24,24,25) sts rem, then in foll 4th rows until 19 (19,20,20,21) sts rem. Work until armhole measures 9.5(9.5,10,10.5,10.75)".
Shoulder shaping: Cast off 10(10,10,10,11) sts at beg of next row. Work 1 row. Cast off. Slip next 23 sts on to a stitch holder and leave. Join yarn to rem sts, knit to end. Cont on these 25(26,27,28,29) sts. Work as for first side, reversing shaping.
FRONT: Work as for back.
NECKBAND: Sew right shoulder seam. With smaller size needles and right side facing, pick up and knit 167(167,171,171,175) sts evenly around neck, including sts from stitch holders. Work 11 rows k1, p1 ribbing. Cast off in ribbing.
Armhole Bands: Join left shoulder seam. With smaller needles and right side facing, pick up and knit 113(113,117,117,121) sts evenly along armhole edge. Work 11 rows k1, p1 ribbing. Cast off in ribbing.
FINISHING: Sew side seams.
