Monterey Leaf Vest
Materials:
Crystal Palace Monterey 100% mercerized cabled cotton, 100 gr skeins.
Color #011 5 (5, 6) skeins.
Crystal Palace Bamboo Needles: sizes 6 and 9 or sizes to obtain correct
gauge.
ABBREVIATIONS:
yo: yarn over top of needle.
skp: sl 1, knit 1, pass sl st over knit st.
sk2tp: sl 1, knit 2 tog, pass sl st over the k2 tog.
rev St st: reverse Stockinette stitch
RS: right side
WS: wrong side.
PATTERN STITCHES
1. K1,p1 ribbing
2. Rev St st: p RS, k WS
3. Garter st: k every row
4. Leaf pattern:
Row 1: yo, k1, yo
Row 2 & all even rows: p
Row 3: k1, yo, k1, yo, k1
Row 5: k2, yo, k1, yo, k2
Row 7: k3, yo, k1, yo, k3
Row 9: skp, k5, k2tog
Row 11: skp, k3, k2tog
Row 13: skp, k1, k2 tog
Row 15: sk2tp
These 15 rows form
leaf pattern.
NOTE: leaf pattern originates from one st and increases
on right side rows. Therefore, the number of rev St sts on each side of leaf
pattern remains constant.
BACK: with smaller needles cast on 80(88,96) sts. Work
k1,p1 rib for 2/2." Change to larger needles and rev St st.
Work evenly to 11-1/2(12,12-1/2)" from beg. Mark each side
for start of armholes. Cont in pattern to 21(22,23)" from beg.
Shape shoulders, short rows, 1-4: work to last 9(10,11)
sts, turn.
Rows 5 & 6: work to last 10(11,12) sts, turn. Working on
all sts, work 2 rows in garter st. At beg of next 2 rows bind off 28(31,34) sts.
Sl remaining 24(26,28) sts onto st holder for neckband.
FRONT: work same as for back for 2-1/2." Cont with
smaller needles:
Inc row for small size: k15, p1, k13, place st marker;
p6, p inc one st in next st, p9, p inc one st in next st, p6,
place st marker on needle; k13, p1, k6, k inc one st in next st, k7, 83 sts.
Inc row for medium: k7, k inc one st in next st, k7, p1,
k15, place st marker, p7, p inc one st in next st, p9, p inc 1 st in next st,
p7, place marker; k15, p1, k16, 91 sts.
Inc row for large: k17, p1, k17, place marker, p8, p inc
one st in next st, p9, p inc 1 st in next st, p8, place marker; k17, p1, k8, k
inc one st in next st, k7, 99 sts.
All sizes: (25 [27,29] sts between st markers) change to
larger needles.
Row 1: (RS) p15(16,17), k1 (stem st), p13(15,17), k to
next marker, p13(15,17), k1 (stem st), p15(16,17).
Row 2: k15(16,17), p1, k13(15,17), p to next marker,
k13(15,17), p1, k15(16,17).
Repeat these 2 rows to 11-1/2 (12, 12-1/2") from beg, end on
WS. Place marker in each side of work for start of armholes.
Shape neck, left side.
Row 1: p15(16,17), place st marker, work row 1 of leaf pattern, place
marker, p13(15,17), k12(13,14), sl remaining 42(46,50) sts onto st holder,
41(45,49) sts.
Row 2: p 12 (13,14), k to next marker, work row 2 of leaf
pattern to next marker, k to end of row.
Row 3: p to first marker, work row 3 of leaf pattern to
next marker, p6(7,8), k1 (new stem st), p6(7,8), k to last 2 sts, k2 tog (neck
dec). Cont to work leaf pattern between first set of markers, new stem st as
established and remaining sts in established patterns, and at same time, dec one
st at neck edge in same manner every other row twice more, then every 4th row
10(11,12) times, working another leaf pattern on new stem st in same manner as
before when new stem measures 3-1/4". When all neck decs are complete, work
evenly on 28(31,34) sts to 21(22,23)" from beg. End with right side row.
Shape shoulder, short rows, 1 & 3: work to last 9(10,11)
sts, turn.
Rows 2, 4 & 6: work to end of row.
Row 5: work to last 10(11,12) sts, turn. Working on all
stitches, work 2 rows in garter st. Bind off.
Shape neck, right front: from WS, sl 41(45,49) sts of
right side from holder onto larger needle, leaving center st on holder for
neckband.
Row 1: k12(13,14), p13(15,17), place marker, work row 1
of leaf pattern, place marker, p15(16,17).
Row 2: k15(16,17), work row 2 of leaf pattern,
k13(15,17), p12(13,14).
Row 3: k2 tog (neck dec), k to next marker, p6(7,8), k1
(new stem st), p6(7,8), work row 3 of leaf pattern, p15(16,17). Finish as for
left side, reversing all shaping.
FINISHING:
sew right shoulder seam.
Neckband: RS facing, with smaller needles beg left front,
pick up and knit 50(52,54) sts along left front neck edge, place st marker, knit
one st from holder at center front, place marker, pick up and knit 50(52,54) sts
along right front neck edge, k 24(26,28) sts from back holder, 125(131,137) sts.
Row 1: * k1, p1, repeat from * to 2 sts before first
marker, k2 tog, p center st, k2 tog, ** p1, k1, repeat from ** to end of row.
Row 2 (RS): p1, * k1, p1, repeat from * to 2 sts before
first marker, k2 tog, k center st, k2 tog, p1, ** k1, p1, repeat from ** to end
of row. Repeat these 2 rows for 1." Bind off all sts loosely in rib st. Sew left
shoulder seam and neckband. Armbands: RS facing, use smaller needles to pick up
and knit 106(112,118) sts along armhole edge between markers. Work in k1,p1
ribbing for 1." Bind off all sts in rib st. Sew side seams and armbands.
