Crystal Palace Yarns
 

Monterey Tumbling Blocks


Materials:
Crystal Palace Monterey 100% mercerized cabled cotton, 100 gr skeins. Color A (rust #6) 5,(6, 6) skeins; color teal #72 (B) 2, (3, 3,) skeins; color natural-ecru (C)  2, (3, 3) skeins.

Crystal Palace Bamboo Needles:
sizes 7 and 10 or sizes for correct gauge; 16" circular needle size 7, bobbins

Finished measurements:
chest 35-1/2" (42-1/2", 46"), length 23" (27, 27")

Gauge: 18 sts = 4" in Stockinette st on larger needles. Be sure to check gauge, cotton gauge varies from knitter to knitter. Adjust needle size to obtain correct gauge.

PATTERN STITCHES

1. K1,p1 ribbing.

2. St st: k on right side, p on wrong side, plus color blocking following chart.

3. Seed st (worked on an even number of sts):

Row 1: * k1, p1, rep from*.

Row 2: *p1, k1, rep from *.

NOTE: use a separate bobbin of yarn for each color block. Do not carry yarn across back. Avoid holes when changing colors by crossing next color over current one at back of work and pick up from underneath.

BACK: with smaller needles and color A, cast on 75(91,99) sts. Work k1, p1 rib for 3," inc 5 sts evenly spaced across last row, 80(96,104) sts. Change to larger needles. Work in St st following chart. At 13(16,16)" from beg, mark each end of row for start of armholes. When 100(120,120) rows are complete sl 25(32,35) sts each end onto st holders for shoulders and center 30(32,34) sts onto another holder for back of neck.

FRONT: work same as back, marking start of armholes, until 20(24,24)" from beg.

Shape neck: work across 29(36,39) sts. Sl center 22(24,26) sts onto 2 st holders (11[12,13] sts on each holder). Attach 2nd ball of yarn and work across remaining 29(36,39) sts. Working both sides separately but at same time, dec one st at each neck edge every other row 4 times, 25(32,35) sts. Work evenly until front measures same as back. Sl remaining sts of each side onto holders for shoulders.

SLEEVES: with smaller needles and color A, cast on 35(35,41) sts. Work k1,p1 rib for 3." On last WS row, inc 11 sts evenly across row, 46(46,52) sts. Next row, using color A, k 11 (11,14) sts, place marker, work chart for quilt block pattern on next 24 sts, place marker, k last 11(11,14) sts using color A. Keeping sts outside markers in color A and center 24 sts between markers in quilt block pattern following chart, inc one st each end of needle every 3rd row 22(25,24) times, 90(96,100) sts. Work evenly to 171/2(18,18)." Bind off loosely. :

FINISHING: Slip shoulder sts onto larger needles. With right sides tog and needle points at right, insert tip of a third needle through front of loop of first st on front needle, then back needle. K tog. Repeat on next sts, front needle then back, passing first st over 2nd st (one st bound off). Repeat until all sts bound off. Substitute Kitchener st for a firmer seam.

COLLAR: with RS facing, using color A and circular needle, k 11(12,13) sts from right front neck holder, pick up and k 15 sts along right front neck edge, k 30(32,34) sts from back holder, pick up and k 15 sts along left front neck edge, k 11(12,13) sts from left front neck holder, 82(86,90) sts. Work back and forth in seed st for 3." Bind off firmly as if to knit. Sew in sleeves between armhole markers. Sew side and sleeve seams.
