BACK: With smaller needles cast on 51(55,59,65) sts and
work in k1,p1 rib for 1-1/2". Change to larger needles and work in beaded rib st
until piece measures 14 (14-1/2, 15, 15 1/2)" from beg.
To Shape armholes: keeping in pattern st bind off 5 sts
at beg of next two rows. When piece measures 24 (24-1/2,25,25-1/2)" bind off
10(12,14,17) sts at beg of next two rows. Place rem 21 sts on a holder for back
neck.
LEFT FRONT: With smaller needles cast on 29(31,33,37) sts
and work in k1,p1 rib for 1-1/2," ending ready to begin a right side row. Change
to larger needles and work beaded rib st on all but last 4 sts. Place these 4
sts on holder (to be picked up later to form buttonband). Work in pattern until
piece measures 14(14-1/2,15,15-1/2)" from beg. To shape armhole: bind off
5 sts at beg of next right side row.
To shape neck: When piece measures 20-1/2 (21,21-1/2,22)"
bind off 7(7,7,8) sts at beg of next wrong side row. Then dec 1 st at neck edge
every other row three times. When front measures same as back, bind off rem
10(12,14,17) sts.
RIGHT FRONT: With smaller needles cast on 29(31,33,37)
sts. Work in k1, p1 ribbing for 1." At inside edge make buttonhole: rib 2
sts, yo, k2 tog. Continue ribbing until it measures 1-1/2," then work same as
left front, reversing all shapings.

SLEEVES: With smaller needles cast on 33 sts. Work in
k1,p1 ribbing for 1-1/2." Change to larger needles and work in beaded rib st.
Inc 1 st each end of needle every 5 rows, 11 times, 88 sts. Work evenly until
piece measures 18(18-1/2, 19, 19-1/2)" from beg. Bind off loosely.
FINISHING: Left front edge, with smaller needles
pick up 4 sts from holder and continue working these sts in k1,p1 rib. When band
is long enough to meet neck edge, place sts back onto holder. Sew band to left
front edge. On buttonband sew one button one inch above bottom of band and
another 2 inches below neck edge. Then evenly space 2 more buttons between first
two. Right front edge: with smaller needles pick up 4 sts from holder and
work in k1,p1 rib making buttonholes (rib 2, yo, k2 tog) to correspond to
placement of buttons on other band. When band is same length as left band place
sts back onto holder. Sew band to edge.
COLLAR: With smaller needles, beginning at right neck
edge knit the 4 sts from holder, pick up 25 sts along neck edge, knit the 21 sts
from back holder, pick up 25 sts along left neck edge, and knit the 4 sts from
holder. Work these 79 sts in k1,p1 rib for 34." Make a buttonhole at right front
above the other buttonholes. Continue in rib for another 1". Bind off tightly.
Set in sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams.
