Merino Frappe Cloud Cardigan*  Cloud cardigan in Merino Frappe from Crystal Palace yarns
free knitting pattern

Finished Measurements: chest 37 (40, 43, 47)"

MATERIALS:

Crystal Palace Merino Frappe, 8(8,9) 50 gr skeins. Crystal Palace Bamboo Needles sizes 8 and 10-1/2 or size to obtain correct gauge. 1 large stitch holder, 2 small stitch holders, 5 buttons.

GAUGE: 11 sts = 4" in beaded rib st on larger needles. To save time be sure to check gauge before beginning. Cast on at least 19-21 sts for a test swatch (odd number of sts). It is highly recommended to learn this stitch while doing a swatch to insure even tension for the actual sweater.

PATTERN STITCHES:

1. K1,p1 ribbing.

2. Beaded rib stitch:

Row 1: (right side) knit.

Row 2: k1 (edge st) * p1, k1b (k1b = insert needle through center of stitch below next st on needle and knit this in usual way, slipping the st above off needle at same time) *. Repeat between *'s. End p1, k1 (edge st).
Repeat these 2 rows for pattern.
NOTE: when working decreases never k1b on an edge stitch. Work a k1 or p1 instead.

BACK: With smaller needles cast on 51(55,59,65) sts and work in k1,p1 rib for 1-1/2". Change to larger needles and work in beaded rib st until piece measures 14 (14-1/2, 15, 15 1/2)" from beg.

To Shape armholes: keeping in pattern st bind off 5 sts at beg of next two rows. When piece measures 24 (24-1/2,25,25-1/2)" bind off 10(12,14,17) sts at beg of next two rows. Place rem 21 sts on a holder for back neck.

LEFT FRONT: With smaller needles cast on 29(31,33,37) sts and work in k1,p1 rib for 1-1/2," ending ready to begin a right side row. Change to larger needles and work beaded rib st on all but last 4 sts. Place these 4 sts on holder (to be picked up later to form buttonband). Work in pattern until piece measures 14(14-1/2,15,15-1/2)" from beg. To shape armhole: bind off 5 sts at beg of next right side row.

To shape neck: When piece measures 20-1/2 (21,21-1/2,22)" bind off 7(7,7,8) sts at beg of next wrong side row. Then dec 1 st at neck edge every other row three times. When front measures same as back, bind off rem 10(12,14,17) sts.

RIGHT FRONT: With smaller needles cast on 29(31,33,37) sts. Work in k1, p1 ribbing for 1." At inside edge make buttonhole: rib 2 sts, yo, k2 tog. Continue ribbing until it measures 1-1/2," then work same as left front, reversing all shapings.

SLEEVES: With smaller needles cast on 33 sts. Work in k1,p1 ribbing for 1-1/2." Change to larger needles and work in beaded rib st. Inc 1 st each end of needle every 5 rows, 11 times, 88 sts. Work evenly until piece measures 18(18-1/2, 19, 19-1/2)" from beg. Bind off loosely.

FINISHING: Left front edge, with smaller needles pick up 4 sts from holder and continue working these sts in k1,p1 rib. When band is long enough to meet neck edge, place sts back onto holder. Sew band to left front edge. On buttonband sew one button one inch above bottom of band and another 2 inches below neck edge. Then evenly space 2 more buttons between first two. Right front edge: with smaller needles pick up 4 sts from holder and work in k1,p1 rib making buttonholes (rib 2, yo, k2 tog) to correspond to placement of buttons on other band. When band is same length as left band place sts back onto holder. Sew band to edge.

COLLAR: With smaller needles, beginning at right neck edge knit the 4 sts from holder, pick up 25 sts along neck edge, knit the 21 sts from back holder, pick up 25 sts along left neck edge, and knit the 4 sts from holder. Work these 79 sts in k1,p1 rib for 34." Make a buttonhole at right front above the other buttonholes. Continue in rib for another 1". Bind off tightly. Set in sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams.
