Materials:
11(12), [6(7)] 50 gr balls - Crystal Palace Waikiki 
11 (12), [6(7)] 50 gr balls - Crystal Palace Cotton Chenille 100% cotton
(Yarns are held together throughout knitting).
Crystal Palace Bamboo or DAISY Needles single point sizes 9 and 10-1/2, stitch holders.
Smooth cotton yarn for sewing seams.

Gauge: 3.5 sts = 1" in Stockinette stitch (St st) on larger needles (holding one strand of each yarn together). Take time to check gauge.

Back: With smaller needles and one strand of each yarn cast on 78(84), [66(72)] sts. Work 3 rows garter st. Change to larger needles and cont in St st until piece measures 1.5" from garter st. Dec 1 st each side.
Dec 1 st each side 8, [2] times more every 1.5", 60(66), [60(66)] sts on needle. Work until back measures 18, [9]" from beg of work.
Armhole: Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows. Work straight until back measures 11" from armhole bind offs.
Shape shoulders: Bind off 6(7), [6(7)] sts at beg of next 4 rows. Place rem 28(30), [28(30)] sts on holder for back neck.

Right Front:
With smaller needles and one strand of each yarn cast on 39 (43), [34 (38)] sts. Work 3 rows garter st. Change to larger needles and work in St st for 1.5". Dec 1 st at side edge. Dec 1 st at side edge 8, [3] times more every 1.5", 30 (34), [30 (34)] sts. Work until front measures 18, [9]" from beg of work.
Armhole: Bind off 4 sts at side edge. Work straight until front measures 6" from armhole bind offs.
Shape neck: (Neck shaping same for both short and long vests). At front neck edge bind off 6 sts at beg of row. Work 1 row. Bind off 3 (4) sts at beg of row. Work 1 row. Bind off 2(3) sts. Work 1 row. Dec 1 st at neck edge every other row, 3 times. 12 (14) sts on needle. Work straight until work measures 11" from armhole bind offs. Bind off 6 (7) sts at side edge, every other row, 2 times.

Left Front: Work to correspond to right front reversing all shaping.

Front Bands:
Left Band: With smaller needles and right side facing, pick up and knit 82, [50] sts down left front edge. Work 3 rows, in k2,p2 ribbing.
Next row: bind off all sts in k2, p2 rib.
Right Band: Pick up and knit 82, [50] sts up right front edge.
Work 1 row in k2, p2 rib.
2nd row: (Buttonhole row) Work 66, [34] sts, bind off 3 sts, work 5 sts, bind off 3 sts, work 5 sts.
3rd row: Work even casting on 3 sts over each 3 bound off sts.
4th row: Bind off all sts in k2, p2 rib.

Neckband: Sew shoulder seams with smooth cotton yarn, using a weaving stitch. With smaller needles, right side facing, pick up and knit 29 (30) sts along right front neck edge, 28 (30) sts from back neck holder, 29 (30) sts along left front neck edge, 86 (88) sts.
Work 1 row in k2, p2 rib.
2nd row: (Buttonhole row) At right front edge work 2 sts, bind off 3 sts, finish row in rib pattern.
3rd row: Work even casting on 3 sts over 3 bound off sts.
4th row: Bind off all sts in k2, p2 rib.

Finishing: At both armhole edges pick up and knit 66 sts. Work 3 rows k2, p2 rib. Bind off all sts in k2, p2 rib. Sew side seams with smooth cotton yarn using a weaving stitch. Sew on buttons.
