Capelet with Cables + Eyelet
free knitting pattern
knit with Aran Marl Wool


Size: One size fits most.

(Approx. Retail cost to knit this Capelet will be $50)

Materials:
7 balls of Aran Marl (color 3006 shown) 100% wool (buy 8 to be safe)
Crystal Palace Bamboo Needles or DAISY Needles Circular 36" or 40" US#9 (5.5mm) and 16" circulars
+ 16" size 8 circulars to knit the collar section (rows 1a-16a)
(You may find it convenient to use 26" or 29" circulars if work becomes too tight on longer circulars).
9 stitch markers (one different color to mark beg of round)
Cable Needle

Gauge: 4.5 sts/inch in St st
Take time to check gauge before beginning.

The circumference around the bottom of the capelet is 54 inches (135 cm). The length of the capelet from the beginning of the neck to bottom is 17 inches (44 cm)

Stitches Used:
Vertical Double Decrease: (dec 2 sts at once) Slip 2, K1, Pass slip stitches over the K stitch
Cables all slant to right: Hold sts in front of work on cable st holder, K sts from left needle, then from cable st  holder. Cables dec in size as capelet progresses: first 4x4 cables, then 3x3, and finally 2x2 cables.
Yarn over: YO
Right Slanting Dec: Knit 2 together: K2tog
Left Slanting Dec: Slip 1, K1, PSSO -or- SSK (knitwise: Slip, Slip, K 2tog)

Instructions (capelet is worked from bottom up)
Using 36" or 40" circular needle, cast on 306 sts. Place stitch marker every 34 sts, one different color at end.
Work 2 rows of Garter St (P 1 row, K 1 row)
The begin working from Chart. Chart shows one of the 34 st repeats of pattern, work 9 repeats around the circumference of the capelet, following the chart.
Change to one size smaller 16" circular needle (thus size 8 if body knit on size 9) for the last 16 rows of collar section, rows 1a-16a.

Change to smaller circumference circular needles as rounds becomes smaller.

To make Capelet larger, add an additional repeat of 34 sts from the chart, inc to 9 balls of yarn.
