Abbreviations:
K Knit, P Purl, dec decrease, rep repeat
M1 Make one st
SSK Slip slip knit
K2tog Knit 2 together

Kfb Knit into the front and then the back of the same st
BO Bind off, CO Cast on
RS Right side, WS Wrong side
st(s) stitch(es), St st Stockinette Stitch

Bag front and back (make 2):
With the circular needle and Color A, CO 4 sts. K one row.
Increase Rows – Row 1: K1, M1, K to the last st, M1, K1
Row 2: K
Rep the two rows above until you have 12 sts on the needles. Leave Color A attached, but leave it hanging and change to Color B. Knit 2 rows following the increase row pattern (14 sts). All increases will be made on the RS and all WS rows will be K.
Cut Color B and switch back to Color A. Work 8 rows using the increase pattern, followed by two rows of Color B using the increase pattern, until there are 54 sts on the needles (this will be after having knit
2 rows in Color B). You will now begin to dec.
Decrease Rows – Row 1: K1, SSK, K to the last 3 sts, K2tog, K1
Row 2: K
Continue to dec, following the established pattern of 8 rows of Color A and 2 rows of Color B. When there are 4 sts on the needle, SSK, K2tog. From the RH needle, RS facing, pass the rightmost st over the left-most st and then BO the remaining one st. Weave in all ends.
Fold-over Side and Bottom Seam:
Hold both the front and back together, WS facing so that the stripes form a chevron pattern on each side where the seam will be worked. With front RS facing and using 2 strands of Color B and the circular needle, pick up 28 sts along the first side of the squares and place a marker. Pick up 28 sts to the next corner and place a marker. Pick up 28 sts to the third corner. 84 sts picked up. Turn and begin working reverse St st rows, starting with a K row, as follows:
Row 1: K to the last st before the marker and then Kfb the next two sts. Work to the last st
before the next marker and then Kfb the next two sts. K to the end of the row and turn. (88 sts)
Row 2 &4: P
Row 3: Rep Row 1 (92 sts)
Row 5: Rep Row 1 (96 sts)
BO in P, cut yarn with a long enough tail for hemming, fold the hem with the P side out and use the long tail to hem the binding to the back side of the border invisibly.
Top Binding and Flap:
Using Color C, and RS of front facing you, pick up 32 sts across the top of the bag and side bindings. Continue picking up another 32 sts across the back top and bindings. Place marker, join, and K two rounds, alternating a K with a P round. At the beginning of the third round, BO 40 sts, K the next
16, and then BO the last 8 sts. Cut yarn and reattach to the held sts, RS facing, and knit in garter st for 10 rows.
Row 11: K1, SSK, K10, K2tog, K1 (14 sts)
Row 12, 14, 18, 20, 22: K
Row 13: K1, SSK, K8, K2tog, K1 (12 sts)
Row 15: K1, SSK, K2, BO2, K2, K2tog, K1 (8 sts)
Row 16: K4, CO2, K4 (10 sts)
Row 17: K1, SSK, K4, K2tog, K1 (8 sts)
Row 19: K1, SSK, K2, K2tog, K1 (6 sts)
Row 21: K1, SSK, K2tog, K1 (4 sts)
Row 23: BO all 4 sts. Weave in all ends.
Finishing: Lightly block the bag, if necessary. Affix handles to accommodate the needs of the style chosen. Sew on button so that flap closes securely over it.
