Gauge:

given only as a point of reference. Because of the textural
varieties in the Musique, gauge varies, and in the overall process is
unimportant.
Finished size:
14˝" wide at the
base x 11" tall x 2˝" deep (19" wide at the widest point) before felting.
Finished bag is 6" tall x 12" wide at the widest point x 2" deep after
felting
Techniques: This bag begins with a knitted rectangle from which stitches are
picked up for knitting in the round, using a series of increase rows then
decrease rows. The I-cord
handles are knitted on before felting. The felted rosette is knitted,
felted, and then applied after felting.
Abbreviations:
K - Knit; P -
Purl; K2tog - Knit two stitches together; SSK - Slip one stitch knit-wise,
slip another stitch knit-wise, insert the left hand needle into the front of
the two slipped stitches and knit them together; M1 - Pick up the yarn
between the stitch you have just made and the next one, place it on the
right-hand needle, and knit into the back of it to make one increase; RS -
Right side; WS - Wrong side; PM - Place marker; BO - Bind off; RM - Remove
marker
Instructions:
Bottom of bag: With Musique and the circular
needle, cast on 36. Knit 12 rows in garter stitch.
Body of Bag: PM and then begin to pick
up stitches as follows: From the first short edge of the rectangle, pick up
6 stitches, PM. From the other long edge of the rectangle, pick up 36
stitches, PM. From the remaining short edge of the rectangle, pick up 6
stitches, and using the uniquely colored marker, place it on the needle to
indicate the beginning of the round. (84 stitches)
Join and begin knitting in the round.
Knit one round, and then begin to
increase stitches only on the front and back of the bag as follows (side
ends of the bag remain constant at 6 stitches each):
Round 2: *K1, M1, K to the last stitch
before the marker, M1, K7* twice
Round 3: Knit
Repeat these two rounds until there are 54 stitches between the markers for
the front and back of the bag (120 stitches total, 19 rounds worked)
Rounds 20-31: Knit
Beginning with Round 32, decrease each
round as follows: *SSK, K to the last two stitches before the marker, K2tog,
K6* twice. Repeat this round until you once again have 36 stitches between
the markers for the front and back of the bag (84 stitches, 40 rounds
worked)
Change to Fjord and knit 4 rounds. On
the 5th round, you will bind off some stitches, leaving others live on the
cable for the I-cord handles.
Round 5: Front of bag – K3, BO the
next 6 stitches (this leaves one stitch on the right needle after binding
off 6), K2 (for the second group of 3 live stitches on the right needle), BO
the next 12 stitches, K2 BO6, K2
Side of bag – RM, BO6, RM
Back of bag – K2, BO6, K2, BO12, K2,
BO6, K2
Side of bag – RM, BO6, RM
At this point, you will have 12 live stitches on the front (4 sets of 3) and
12 live stitches on the back (4 sets of 3) left on the cable. Do not cut
yarn.
Handles:
With the double pointed needles, RS facing, begin working I-cord on the
first set of three stitches (outside right front corner) and work 10 rows.
Cut yarn, place the stitches on a holder, and work 10 rows of I-cord using
the next three live stitches left on the circular needle. Leave the yarn
attached, and with RS facing, return the first I-cord stitches to the
needle, to the right of the ones just worked (6 stitches on the needle).
Using the yarn that is attached to the 2nd cord, bring the yarn behind the
work back to the first stitch on the needle, begin knitting I-cord, and work
one row as follows:
K2tog three times (3 stitches left on the needle).
Continue working I-cord until you have knitted 9" of cord.
At this point, you will add stitches, divide the work into two cords, knit
more rows and then graft to the remaining live stitches on the front. This
will be done in two steps. Be sure you continue working with RS facing and
are careful not to twist the cords.
Using the first two stitches, K1, M1, K1, then place the remaining stitch on
a holder or a safety pin, making sure it doesn’t get dropped. Work 10 rows
of I-cord.
Cut the
yarn, leaving a tail long enough for grafting, and then use the Kitchener
stitch to graft the three stitches on the needle to the 3 live stitches at
the front outside corner of the bag, making sure not to twist the handle in
the process.
Place the
one held stitch on the needle, RS facing. Using the Fjord, attach the yarn
in the V at the base of the right hand cord just knitted, pulling up one
loop onto the right needle, and then M1 by picking up the yarn that leads
into the last remaining unknitted stitch, knit into the back of that picked
up yarn and then knit the last stitch (3 stitches on the needle). Work 10
rows of I-cord and then graft to the remaining 3 live stitches on the inside
left front corner of the bag using the Kitchener stitch. Weave in the ends,
using the tails to tighten any loose areas at the yarn joins.
Repeat the
process for the handle on the back of the bag.
Rosette:
Using the
circular needle, cast on 40 stitches using a cable cast on. Knit 7 rows in
garter stitch. Holding the needle with the 40 stitches in either your right
hand or your left hand, the first stitch on that needle will have each of
the other stitches passed over it. This will cause the strip to curl up on
itself. Begin passing stitches over that first stitch one at a time until
only that one stitch remains on the needle. Cut the yarn and pull the tail
through the remaining stitch and tighten. With a tapestry needle, pull the
tail from the cast on edge down through the center of the rosette and tie
the two tails together. This rosette will be applied to the bag after
felting. (Tip: for more curl or a fuller rosette, cast on more stitches.)
Finishing:
Felt the bag and
the rosette using your preferred method and shape to dry. Sew the rosette to
the front of the bag with a button or bead in its center. Apply
closure hardware, if desired.
