Gauge: 3½ stitches per inch in stockinette stitch

Finished size: 12" diameter and 2¾" gusset depth before felting; 7½" diameter and 1½" gusset depth after felting

Techniques: This purse is knit in one piece, first the front, then the sides, and finally the back. The front involves working in the round and increasing/make one.
To work the sides, some of the front stitches will be bound off, and the work will resume being knit flat, until time to work the back, when stitches will be cast on and work will resume in the round, decreasing to the center of the back.
To finish, a single crochet trim is applied, and the handle is made by picking up stitches, knitting an I-cord, and then seaming the handle to the opposite side.

Front of bag: With Color A, cast on 8 stitches using either Magic Loop method*, 2-Circular Needle method*, or evenly distribute stitches over 3-4 double point needles, using the fourth-fifth as the working needle. Even numbered rounds will be the increase rounds. Leave a tail long enough to weave through the center front hole to draw it up before felting.

Round 1: PM, join to work in the round, and knit all 8 stitches
Round 2: *K1, M1* (16 stitches)
Round 3 (and all odd numbered rounds): Knit
Round 4: *K2, M1* (24 stitches)
Round 6: *K3, M1* (32 stitches)
Round 8: *K4, M1* (40 stitches)
Round 10: *K5, M1* (48 stitches)
Round 12: *K6, M1* (56 stitches)

Round 14: *K7, M1* (64 stitches)
Round 16: *K8, M1* (72 stitches)
Round 18: *K9, M1* (80 stitches)
Round 20: *K10, M1* (88 stitches)
Round 22: *Knit 11, M1* (96 stitches)
Round 23: Knit

Row 1 of side gusset (RS): Continuing around, bind off 24 stitches, P72, and turn work. Cut Color A, attach Color B and begin knitting flat.
Rows 2-8: Knit 72 and turn. (Knit the even rows and purl the odd rows, for a stockinette stitch gusset.)
Note: The purl bumps created on the RS edges of the gusset will be used as an easy guide for applying the
single crochet trim during finishing.

Row 9/Beginning of back: Cut Color B, attach Color A. P72, cast on 24, PM. (96 stitches)
Round 1: Continuing on in the round, join, K96
(Odd rounds will all be knit even; even rows are decrease rows.)
Round 2: *K10, K2tog* (88 stitches)
Round 4: *K9, K2tog* (80 stitches)
Round 6: *K8, K2tog* (72 stitches)
Round 8: *K7, K2tog* (64 stitches)
Round 10: *K6, K2tog* (56 stitches)
Round 12: *K5, K2tog* (48 stitches)
Round 14: *K4, K2tog* (40 stitches)
Round 16: *K3, K2tog* (32 stitches)
Round 18: *K2, K2tog* (24 stitches)
Round 20: *K1, K2tog* (16 stitches)
Round 22: *K2tog* (8 stitches)
Round 23: K8. Cut yarn and pull through all 8 stitches on the needle, tighten center hole and weave in ends.

Binding: Beginning at one of top side edges, attach Color B and with crochet hook Size L, work one single crochet in each garter ridge purl bump where the gusset edge begins, continuing around and across the top of the bag. 96 single crochet stitches. Join to the top of the first SC with a slip stitch, break yarn, pull tail through last chain and weave in the end. Repeat for other side.

Strap: With size #11 double point needles, beginning at the top edge of one of one side of the gusset, between the binding, and with RS facing, pick up 6 stitches. Work 5 rows of
stockinette stitch, beginning and ending with a WS row. Turn work to RS and begin working I-cord on the six stitches on the needle. Work until the I-cord portion measures 20" and then begin working flat in stockinette stitch for 5 rows, beginning and ending on a RS row. Bind off all six stitches and seam invisibly to the top of the other gusset.

Trim: With Size #7 double point needles, with Color B (or your preference of remnant yarn colors) cast on 19, and then bind off 18, leaving one stitch on the needle.
Work the following 14 more times – *Cast on 18, bind off 18*.
Switch to another color and work the following 11 times – *Cast on 14, bind off 14*.
Switch to another color and work the following 7 times – *Cast on 10, bind off 10*. On the seventh repeat, bind off all stitches and cut yarn, leaving a 24" tail. Thread a darning needle with the yarn tail and baste through the base of the trim piece. Pull up to gather the pieces into a circle, arranging evenly. Sew the base of the trim piece to secure the arrangement of fringe, and then sew the piece securely to the center of the
bag. Optionally, apply a bead or a button to the center of the trim piece.

Felt the bag using your preferred method.
