free knit baby blanket pattern

The baby blanket below was the inspiration for the one above. It is by Mrs. I's and in just one color of Puffin & one color of Cotton Twirl

Puffin - Cotton Twirl Stripes Baby Blanket

Size: 29" x 29", approx.

Materials:
4 - 50 gr. balls Puffin (2 balls each of 2 colors), 3 - 50 gr. balls Cotton Twirl
Model uses Puffin color A #301 "citrus dots", Puffin color B #0109 "baby green", and Cotton Twirl #2929 "mango"
26" or 35" US size 11 Crystal Palace Circular Bamboo

I chose a dotted and a solid color of Puffin for this blanket, combined with a solid color of Cotton Twirl. Many other color combinations are possible. Click the yarn names just above to see the complete color range for each yarn.

Gauge is not crucial with this blanket. It will be approx. 3.25-3.5 sts/inch.

Instructions
(the entire blanket is worked in garter st, K all rows)
When changing colors for stripes, overlap ends of both colors for at least 4-5 sts at edge of work.
If you want fringed edge, wind for fringe before knitting so you will have enough yarn, see bottom of pattern below for how to make Puffin fringe.

Cast on 88 sts of Puffin, color A.
Work 8 rows of garter st (K all rows) with Puffin, color A
Change to Cotton Twirl, work 10 rows
Change to Puffin, color B, work 10 rows.
Continue thusly, working Cotton Twirl between each stripe of A and then B of Puffin.
End blanket with Puffin, color B to use equal amts of yarns.
Bind off loosely.

Optional: Puffin Fringe on the sides of blanket where yarns are changed. Puffin makes an excellent fringe since it cannot unravel.
To cut yarn for fringe, hold both A and B colors together, wind around a plastic CD case, 32 times for each side of blanket. Poke a pair of cut ends through the edge sts, working a hole with finger at least 2 sts in from edge. Pull folded end through and pass ends through the loop, pull snugly. Add fringe every 3-4 sts.
