Panda Soy or Maizy Baby Socks
(or use Panda Cotton)
Designed and Knit by Laura Andersson, CPY Sock Guru & Sirius Knitting Publications

Inspiration: New babies, soft yarn, & a nice hand-knit shower gift

Materials:
1 - 50 gm ball Maizy: #1016 earth  -or-
1 – 50 gr ball Panda Soy #2001 cocoa-blues
(or use Panda Cotton)
CPY Bamboo DPN or STAR Bamboo DPN needles in sizes US 2 (2.75 mm), or size required for gauge.
Large eyed tapestry needle or crochet hook
Note:
since wee baby won’t WALK in these socks, there isn’t any need for the extra firmness one normally uses for socks.
[You will likely be able to get 3 socks from 1 - 50 gr. ball of Panda Soy or Maizy.]

Gauge: 8 sts/inch (24sts/10 cm) in St st.
Size: Infant 0-6 months

Abbreviations:
CO- cast on; cont- continue; dec- decrease; dpn- double pointed needles; K- Knit; K2tog - knit 2 sts together; P- Purl; rem- remaining; rep- repeat; St st- stockinette stitch; YO - yarn over; PSSO- pass slip st over; rnd(s) - round(s); st(s)- stitch(es); tog- together.

Instructions:
CO 44 st. Join being careful not to twist. Place marker. P1 rnd, K1 rnd.
Rolling rib: Work P2K2 ribbing until work measures 1 in. from starting edge. Switch to K2P2 rib for ˝ in.

Heel: K12 st; turn, Slip 1, P23 st.
These 24 sts are the heel. Place rem sts on holder, or to avoid stretching sides and making the “dread gusset holes” place on piece of contrasting yarn.
Front: *(Slip 1, K1), across; turn.
Back: Slip 1, P all sts, turn.
Rep these 2 rows until heel is 1.5 in from start.
Heel turn: Slip 1, K13, K2tog, K1, turn. Slip 1, P5, P2tog, P1, turn.
Front: Slip 1, K to 1 st before gap, K2tog, K1, turn.
Back: Slip 1, P to 1 st before gap, P2tog, P1, turn.
Rep these 2 rows until all sts are “used up”. End on Back (P row) ready to K.
Gussets: With new needle, K across ˝ st; this will become needle #3.
Needle #1: With new needle, K across rest of row. Pick up & K Slip st going down side of sock.
Needle #2: K instep sts off holder, cont in K2P2 pattern as established (alternatively just work instep in St st).
Needle #3: Pick up & knit Slip sts going up side of sock, and cont on to K sts set aside earlier.
Stop & count. You will have more sts than the 44 you began with; these are decreased in alternate rnds until back to 44 sts.

K 1 or 2 rnd(s) before working any decs. This helps in fitting for high arches and wee feet.
Decrease Rnd:
Needle 1: K across to last 3 sts; K2tog, K1.
Needle 2: Work in K2P2 rib as established.
Needle 3: K1, slip 1, K1, PSSO, K to end
Plain Rnd: K the sts on needles 1 and 3 with no changes; work Needle 2 in K2P2 rib pattern.
Alternate these 2 rnds until back to 44 sts.
Foot: check foot length. Cont to K for needles #1 and 3, rib for needle #2 until sock is 3.25 in from back of heel.
Toe: arrange sts on needles: 24 on needle #2, 10 ea on needles #1 and 3.

Dec rnd:
Needle 1: K to last 3 sts; K2tog, K1.
Needle 2: K1, Slip1, K1, PSSO, K to last 3 sts; K2tog, K1.
Needle 3: K1, Slip 1, K1, PSSO, and K to end.
Plain rnd: K all sts.
Alternate Dec rnd and Plain rnd until 8 sts remain.
Toe closure: cut yarn, leaving an ~8 in end. With crochet hook, pull yarn through sts one at a time, dropping each off needle. Pull tightly to close; tuck end inside.
Finishing:
Work in all ends. Try a crochet hook for this - no need to thread needle & it's fast.
