Ear Flap Hat in Merino 5

Adorable and easy to knit, this ear flap hat will be loved by
both boys and girls. Fits children age 4-8 yrs.
Gauge:
20 sts and 26 rows=4" in St st
Abbreviations:
Beg-begin (ning), CO-cast on; Cont-continue; Dec-decrease; est-established; K-knit; K2tog-knit 2
stitches together; P-purl; rem-remain(ing); rep-repeat; rnd(s)-round(s); RS-right side;
ssk-slip, slip, k2tog; St(s)-stitch
(es); St st-Stockinette stitch; WS-wrong side.
Stitches Used:
Seed St: K the P sts and P the K sts as you work ear flaps and first 5
rounds of the hat.
Stockinette St: for crown of hat - K all rows when working in the round.

Merino 5
by Crystal Palace Yarns (110 yards/50 grams)
1 - 50 gr ball #5208 Blush Pink
Size 8 US (5 mm)

Bamboo 16" circular needles
Stitch holder
Tapestry needle
Instructions
[Note: the ear flaps with cords are knit first and then
attached as the round hat is begun.]
Ear Flaps
CO 3 sts. Work I-cord
for 7".
Work back and forth:
Row 1: k3
Row 2: p3
Row 3: k into front and back of first st, k1, k into front and back of
last st - 5 sts
Row 4: k into front and back of first st, p1, k1, p1, k into front and
back of last st - 7 sts
Row 5: k into front and back of first st, (k1, p1) twice, k1, k into
front and back of last st - 9 sts
Cont in pattern as est, keeping to Seed Stitch pattern (knit the purls and purl
the knits as they face you), until you have 23 sts.
Work 4 rows even in Seed Stitch.
Next Row: p1, ssk, work seed st to last 3 sts, k2tog, p1 - 21 sts
Next Row: Work even in Seed St.
Rep last 2 rows once more.
Cut yarn. Place rem 19 sts on holder.
Make the 2nd ear flap. Do not cut yarn and leave sts on
needle.
Join Flaps And Begin Hat
With circular needles, work Seed St over 19 sts on needle. Using the
Cable Cast-On,
CO 35 sts (for front of hat). Work Seed St over 19 sts on holder. Using the
Cable Cast-On, CO 23 sts (for back of hat) - 96 sts
Join and mark beg of round being careful not to twist sts when joining round.
Work Seed St 5 rnds.
Work St st until hat measures 4" from CO edge.
Decrease Crown
Change to double points when sts no longer fit on circulars.
Rnd 1: *K6, k2tog; rep from * around - 84 sts
Rnd 2: K
Rnd 3: *K5, k2tog; rep from * around - 72 sts
Rnd 4: K
Rnd 5: *K4, k2tog; rep from * around - 60 sts
Rnd 6: K
Rnd 7: *K3, k2tog; rep from * around - 48 sts
Rnd 8: K
Rnd 9: *K2, k2tog; rep from * around - 36 sts
Rnd 10: K
Rnd 11: *K1, k2tog; rep from * around - 24 sts
Rnd 12: K
Rnd 13: *K2tog around - 12 sts
Rnd 14: K
Rnd 15: *K2tog around - 6 sts
Cut yarn, leaving a tail. Thread tail through tapestry needle
and through rem 6 sts and remove from needle. Pull tightly to close top of hat.
Weave in ends on WS.
