Tri-Cornered Baby Hat

Designed by Cathy Campbell for Crystal Palace Yarns

Description:  This hat is fairly easy to work up and a great way to practice your I-cords and Kitchener's Stitch!  (We also have versions of this hat in Chunky Mochi and Mochi Plus.)

Level:  Easy (knowledge of knitting in the rnd, I-Cords and Kitchener st recommended)

Size:  15" circumference

Materials:

*You may use a 16" circular needle instead for the body of the hat.  Even though the circumference is 15", you are not working on the very tips of the needles so the circumference of the working part of the needles is actually about 15".  You will still need at least 2 dpn's for working the Kitchener st.

Gauge:  4 sts=1" over St st

Abbreviations:  BO- bind off; CO- cast on; dpn- double-pointed needle; k- knit; p- purl; rep- repeat; rnd- round; st(s)- stitch(es); St st- Stockinette stitch

Kitchener's Stitch:
With RS facing and holding one double-pointed needle at the front and one at the back, insert yarn needle into first st on front needle PURLWISE. Then insert yarn needle into first st on back needle KNITWISE. *Next, insert yarn needle KNITWISE into first st on front needle, pull st off the needle, and insert yarn needle into second st on front needle PURLWISE. Next, insert yarn needle PURLWISE into first st on back needle, pull the st off the needle, and insert yarn needle into the second st on back needle KNITWISE. Rep from * until 4 sts remain.

I-Cord:
*Knit across the 4 sts, slide the sts to the right end of the dpn and do not turn, rep from * until desired length.

INSTRUCTIONS
CO 60 sts and divide evenly over 4 dpn's.*  Join and begin working in the rnd.  Work k2 x p2 rib for 3".  Change to St st and work even until piece measures ~7.5" from cast-on edge, making sure you have at least 6 yds of yarn left.

Begin Crown:
Divide the first 20 sts over 2 dpn's (10 sts on each), redistributing the rem sts over the other 2 dpn's (or leaving them on the circulars if you them).

Pull out a length of yarn at least 2 yds (6 ft) long and cut.  Thread the yarn needle and work Kitchener st over the sts on the 1st and 2nd dpn's, working from the center of the crown out.  Stop when 4 sts rem.  Sl all 4 sts onto 1 dpn and work I-Cord for 3".  Fasten off and thread yarn through inside of cord into underside of hat.  Repeat for next 2 sets of 20 sts.  Sew up hole in center of crown on underside of hat.  Tie each I-cord in a knot.  Weave in all ends.
