Needles:
Size 6-9 months US Size 6 (4mm) 16” circular and set of double pointed needles
Size 12-18 months US Size7 (4.5 mm) 16” circular and set of 4 double pointed
needles
Gauge:
Size 6-9 months: 21 sts and 34 rows
= 4" in pattern stitch; using Size 6 (4.5 mm) needles
Size 12-18 months: 20 sts and 32 rows = 4" in pattern stitch; using Size
7 (5 mm) needles
Abbreviations: Beg-beginning; CO-cast on; k-knit; k2tog-knit 2 stitches together; PM-place marker; p-purl; p2tog-purl 2 stitches together; rem-remaining; rep-repeat; rnd-round; st(s)-stitch(es)
Directions:
Note: Size 6-9 months use Size 6
needle; Size 12-18 months use Size 7 needles; or size necessary to obtain gauge.
CO 80 sts. Purl 1 row.
PM for beg of rnd, join into round, be careful not to twist sts.
Rnds 1, 4, and 5: Purl.
Rnds 2, 3, and 6: Knit.
Rnds 7 and 8: *K2, p2; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnds 9 and 10: Knit.
Rep rnds 7-10 until piece measures approximately 4 ½” (4 ¾)” from CO edge, end
after working rnd 8.
Crown Shaping:
Change to double pointed needles when necessary.
Dec Rnd 1: *K2tog, p2tog; rep from * to end of rnd—40 sts.
Rnds 2, 5, and 6: *K1, p1; rep from * around.
Rnds 3 and 4: Knit.
Rnd 7: K1, *k2tog around to last st; knit last st together with first st
on next round.
Rnd 8: Repeat round 7—10 sts.
Cut yarn leaving an 8” tail. Thread tail through rem sts, draw tight, and fasten off. Weave in tail to inside. At CO edge weave end to join the 1st row, then weave to inside.
