Aran Print & Stripes - a child's pullover    sw 152
designed and knit by Marilyn Turner for Crystal Palace Yarns


Materials:
2(3,3,3) balls Aran Print col. 2119-rose musk, and coordinating solid colors: 1(2,2,2) balls Aran col 1019-soft brown “A”;  1(2,2,2) balls Aran col. 1006- antique rose “B”; 1(2,2,2) balls Aran col. 1021- putty “C”. 
1 pair Crystal Palace Bamboo Needles size 7, 1 pair size 8 needle and 1 - 16” size 8 circular needle.
2 Stitch Holders

[Materials Note: Aran Print colors coordinate with the Aran solid colors. For a good 'boy combination' of colors you may wish to use these colors:  Aran Print col.2117-fern and these 3 Aran solid colors: 1010-lichen, 1019-soft brown, and 1021-putty.]

Size: Finished chest: 25 (27,29,31) inches
         Length: 12 (13,14,15) inches 
Approx. sizes: 18-24 mos (2-3yrs, 4-5 yrs, 5-6 yrs)
Children vary so much in size, be safe and measure the child's chest and add 3-4 inches for ease in fit.

Gauge: 17.75 sts and 24 rows = a 4” square in stockinette stitch
Note that the stitch gauge is more important than the row gauge.

Abbreviations:
beg - begin(ning), cont-continue; BO-bind off; CO-cast on; dec-decrease; k-knit;  p-purl; rem-remaining; rep-repeat; RS-right side; St(s)-stitch (es); tog - together, WS- wrong side

Stripe Pattern for sleeve

2 rows B
2 rows C
repeat these 6 rows 

Back: With smaller needle and color A CO 56(60,64,68) sts and work 1 row in K2,P2 ribbing, then work 2 rib rows in color B and 2 rows in color C, [five rows of ribbing]. Change to larger needle and Aran Print and work in St st until the back is 1 inch less than desired length. Work 2 rows col. C, 2 rows col. B and 2 rows col. A.
Shoulder and neck row
: K across 17(18,19,20) sts BO 22(24,28,28) sts and work across remaining sts. Put the shoulder sts onto a holder to be knit tog with the front in the 3 needle BO. 

Front: Work as for back for 10(11,11.5,12)”. Beg neck shaping, work across 21(22.23,25) sts, join a 2nd ball of yarn and BO center 14(16,18,18) sts. Working both sides at the same time, dec 1 st each neck edge every RS row 4 times. When front is the same length as the back and 1 “ from the shoulder work the stripe pattern and then put the rem sts on holder.

Sleeves: With smaller needle and color A cast on 30(30, 34, 38) sts and work ribbing as for back. change to larger needle and work the sleeve stripe pattern and at the same time increase 1 stitch each edge every 6th row 10(10,11,11) times. When the sleeve is 10(11,12.5,13)” long mark the center of the top of the sleeve and BO all sts.

Finishing: Three needle bind off for shoulders. Transfer the shoulder sts for both the front and the back onto separate needles and with the RS facing, and holding both needles in your left hand, knit together 1 stitch from each needle, do this one more time and then bind off in the normal way. Continue to knit  together 1 st from each of the left hand needles and BO until no sts remain. Rep for 2nd shoulder.  Set in sleeves, using the safety pin as a guide, line up the center of the sleeve with the shoulder seams and sew in sleeves. Sew up side and sleeve seams.
Neck:
using the 16” circular needle and col A pick up about 72(76,80,84) sts and work in K2,P2 ribbing for 2 rounds then change to col B and work until collar is  2.5 inches long. BO loosely.

Note: When using printed colors of yarn, if you find colors pooling too much in one area as you knit, change to knitting from a different ball of the printed color, or from the opposite end of the ball.
