Crystal Palace Yarns
free knitting pattern for baby hat

Special thanks to my grandson,
Marcelo for modeling
(Hat was knit for his 6 mos birthday 9/28/06)

sewn hat shown below

Two Needle Baby Hat
Do you prefer not to use circular or DP needles and would rather knit a baby hat flat and sew up a seam? Then, you'll like this pattern.

Size: one size 6-12 months

Gauge:
9 sts = inch in 2x2 rib NOT stretched
Circumference of hat NOT stretched is 10 inches, it is very stretchy and will fit a wide range of head sizes.
(Marcelo's head wearing hat is 44.5 cm - 17.5")

Materials:
1 pair Crystal Palace Bamboo or DAISY needles size 5
Bunny Hop: (microfiber + angora) - 1 50 gr ball #0061 seascape
1 large eye tapestry needle

Abbreviations:
BO: bind off, k2tog: knit 2 sts together, st: stitch, CO: cast on, DP: double point, inc: increase, rep: repeat

Instructions:
CO 90 sts
Row 1: *K2, P2*, ending K2.
Row 2: *P2, K2,* ending P2
Repeat this 2-2 ribbing until work measures 4 inches
Begin Broken Rib pattern:
Row 1a: K1, P1
Row 2a: K
Row 3: same as Row 1a
Row 4: *K8, k2tog* rep to end of row [80 sts]
Row 5: same as Row 1a (this will break up the pattern where dec's were made, but that is OK)
Row 6: *K7, k2 tog* rep to end of row
Row 7, 9, 11 and all odd rows: repeat Row 5
Row 8: *K6, k2 tog* rep to end of row
Row 10: *K5, k2 tog* rep to end of row
Row 12: *K4, k2 tog* rep to end of row
Row 14: *K3, k2tog* rep to end of row
Row 16: *K2, k2tog* rep to end of row
Row 18: *K1, k2tog* rep to end of row
Row 19: *K1, k2tog* rep to end of row
Repeat Row 18 until only 4 sts remain on needles
If you have DP needles any size from 3 to 5 you may wish to end the hat as I did with 3.5 inches of I-cord worked over the 4 sts left.

If not making I-cord, then finish dec'ing the 4 sts down to one and BO. You could also crochet a little tail of decoration at the top if you wish.

Sew side seam with tapestry needle.
