Monterey
Cotton Crocheted Beach or Tote Bag
A free crochet pattern
MATERIALS:
Crystal Palace Monterey 100% cotton, 5Ogm (70 yds). For Black/White Bag: 3 balls color 00 natural and 7 balls color 20 black For Multi-color Bag: 1 ball each of 10 colors.

One 1.25" button. Crochet hook size H.
GAUGE: 7 sts = 2" in Double Crochet (dc). Take time to check gauge.

To Begin: Follow chart 1 for black and white bag, chart 2 for
multicolored bag, or makeup your own color combination. Chain 6,
sl st into 1st ch to make a ring.
Note: Chain 2 at beg of each round counts as 1 dc.
Round 1: Chain 2. Work 7 dc into ring. Sl st into 2nd of 2 ch. (counts as 8 dc)
Round 2: Chain 2. 2 dc in each st to end of round. Sl st into 2nd of 2 ch at beg of round:(16 sts).
Round 3: Chain 2. 2 dc in each st to end of row. Sl st into 2nd of 2 ch at beg of round. (32 sts).
Round 4: Chain 2, * 1 dc in next st. 2 dc in next st* rep btwn *'s to end of round. Sl st into 2nd of 2 ch at beg of round. (48sts).
Round 5: Chain 2. *1 dc in next 2 sts. 2 dc in next st. * Repeat btwn: *'s to end of round. Sl st into 2nd of 2 ch at beg of round (64 sts).
Round 6: Chain 2. * 1 dc in next 3 sts. 2 dc in next st*. Repeat: btwn *'s to end of round. Sl st into 2nd of2 ch at beg of row. (80 sts).
Round 7: Chain 2. * 1 dc in each of next 7 sts, 2 dc in next st *. Repeat btwn *'s to end of row. Sl st into 2nd of 2 ch at beg of row. (90 sts). :
Round 8: Chain 2. 1 dc in each st to end of round. Sl st into 2nd of 2 ch at beg of row. (90) sts).
Continue as in round 8 until 17 inches from beg or desired length.
Eyelet Round: Chain 2. 1 dc in each of next 4 sts, *ch1, skip next st, 1 dc in each of next 8 sts *, repeat btwn *'s ending round with 1 dc in each of next 4 sts. Sl st into 2nd of 2 ch at beg: of round.(10 eyelets made).
Edging: Chain 1. 1 sc in each st to end of round. Sl st into ch 1 at beg of round. Repeat once.
Plain Strap: *Chain 1. 1 sc in each of next 9 sts. Turn.* Repeat btwn *'s until strap measures 38 inches or desired length. Secure yarn, leaving an 8" tail to sew end of strap to top of bag, opposite of beg of strap.
Striped Strap: With color 509, beg with a sl st, chain 120 (foundation row). Turn. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end. Turn. With color 11, sc in each sc to end. Turn. Chain 1. Sc in each sc to end. With color 72 and beginning at first st of the foundation row, sc in bottom loop of each chain in foundation row to end. Turn. Chain 1. Sc in each sc to end. Sew one end of strap to top of bag. Sew other end to bottom of bag, placing button at end of strap and sewing through holes of button, strap and bag.
Drawstring: Beg with sl st, ch 140. Turn. SC in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain to end. Weave in ends. Lace through eyelets in top of bag. Make a loose half knit in each end of drawstring.
