More Detroit-area men and boys count stitches for health reasons and
for fun.
By Doug Guthrie / The Detroit News
FARMINGTON HILLS -- Following doctor's orders, every day at lunchtime David
Hogg, 47, pushes away from the desk at his computer analyst's job in Farmington
Hills and picks up his knitting.
Hogg suffers from chronic high blood pressure. Medications and the relaxation
he gets from building rows of colorful yarn into scarves and sweaters for family
and co-workers has helped to keep his condition in check.
"It's a way to deal with a stressful day," said Hogg, who has several
knitting projects started at work. At home, he's working on a copy of the
inmate-created poncho Martha Stewart wore the day she strolled out of federal
prison.
"At first, I was all fingers and thumbs, but I've gotten good enough to teach
my daughter and niece," Hogg said. More men are turning to the ancient art of
knitting to find health benefits and relaxation and to express their creativity,
experts say. ... [more]

however, has changed drastically in the past decades. Instead of stereotypical
grannies knitting multi-colored afghans and itchy Christmas sweaters, this
generation's demographic of knitters is more varied, trendier, and usually much
younger. ...

The ancient craft of knitting becomes cool again
The Salt Lake Tribune
Forget the celebrities -- Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz,

binary arithmetic, which scientists have used to design electronic computers....

LITTLE knitters - Even the boys enjoy latest classroom craze
Anchorage Daily News - Anchorage, AK
Trevor Gutierrez wants it known straight up that he plays hockey. And he also
knits.
"I'm like, 'Isn't this for girls?' " the fifth-grader said as he deftly
worked two wooden needles through loops of soft purple yarn early this month.
"Then I saw that poster up there, with the snowboarders making hats," he said.
The poster, showing three obviously cool guys slouching with needles and
yarn, hangs on the wall in teacher Teisha Burke's classroom at Huffman
Elementary School. Its message is clear: Knitting is cool. And these days, it
seems like everyone is reaching for needles -- from adult hipsters on down to
teenagers and grade-school kids. ...

that you're knitting like their mom,'' said Cheng, 27. ``Knitting was a really
