Pattern - Knitting Notes
Note 1: the non-working color should
be twisted with the working color at end-of-round marker; this means it is
carried up each round and not left behind.
The sock pattern is comprised of 3 types of rounds:
St st stripe with A;
St st stripe with B;
and checks with both A & B (either K1A,K1B, alternating as K1B, K1A; or K2A,K2B,
alternating with K2B,K2A).
These Mini Mochi socks can have different stripe widths.
Note 2: if, in the checked
region, you feel the colors are highly similar and the checks don’t show, work A
as P sts for more definition.
Instructions:
Before beginning, pull out a few yards from each ball to ensure that there is no
color overlap.
With color A, CO 72 (84) sts. Join, being careful not to twist. PM.
K1 row with color B.
Ribbing: Work ~1/2 in of K2P2 rib with color A; switch to color B and
work ~1/2 in K2P2 rib.
Cont in ribbing, alternating colors every ~1/2 in or stop when desired.
Begin working Stripes, either plain or checkers.
Work Checks: for 1/1 checks: work 1 rnd K1A, K1B; work 1 rnd K1B, K1A
-or- for 2/2 checks: work 2 rnds K2A, K2B; work 2 rnds K2B, K2A.
If you carefully keep A above and B under you won’t have tangles. At marker,
twist working color over and under non-working color.
Work a 2-5-rnd stripe with Color A; work the same size stripe with Color B.
Cont alternating stripes and checks until leg is ~7" (or desired cuff height)
from CO.
Cut one color & work heel.
Heel:
Heel is worked over 38 sts. K19, turn, P back across 38 sts. Place rem sts on
holder for instep.
Heel front: *(Sl-1, K1), across. Heel back:
Sl-1, P all sts across
Rep these 2 rows until heel is ~2.5 (3.25) in from start, or desired length.
Heel turn: Sl-1, K19, K2tog, K1, turn. Sl1, P3, p2tog,
P1 turn.
Front: Sl-1, K across to 1 st before “gap”. K2tog, K1, turn.
Back: Sl-1, P across to 1 st before “gap”, P2tog, P1, turn.
Rep these 2 rows until all heel sts are used up. End ready for front row.
Gusset pickups: K across ˝ st and change to new needle.
K across rem sts; PU & K slip sts going down side of heel. Change to new needle
#2 and K instep sts; change to new needle and K slip sts going up other side of
heel. End by knitting across rem sts.
Gusset decreases: join color B and return to color pattern as desired, while
decreasing down to starting number of sts, alternating dec rounds as below and
plain rounds thusly:
Dec round: on ndl 1, K to last 3 sts, k2tog, K1; on ndl 2, k
across; on ndl 3, K1, sl-1, K1, psso, and K to end. Plain round: K
with no decs across all 3 needles.
When you have returned to starting 72 sts, K even until sock foot is ~1.75 in
from length of longest toe. Now begin toe decs.
Dec rnd: Ndl 1, K to last 3 sts; K2tog, K1.
Ndl 2, K1, Slip1, K1, PSSO, K to last 3 sts; K2tog, K1. Ndl 3: K1,
Sl1, K1, PSSO, and K to end.
Plain rnd: K all sts.
Alternate Dec rnd and Plain rnd until 8 sts remain.
Toe closure: cut yarn, leaving an ~8 in end. With crochet hook, pull yarn
through sts one at a time, dropping each off needle. Pull tightly to close; tuck
end inside.
Finishing: Work in all ends. Try a crochet hook for
this - no need to thread needle & is fast.
